Skot David Wilson

I've been on Alvin's side since I met him months ago when he spoke to a crowd of 15 dems at HQ on Beach. I've been working with the campaign for a while now, and I do guerrilla canvassing and signs where I engage Republicans... I posted why I like Alvin @ http://alvinformayor.blogspot.com
The guy worked his own ass through college and holds an MBA in BUSINESS... worked in urban policy with application, and in an Executive In Residence @ JU Davis School of Business. Just the place for a socialist liberal, eh?  The PLUTOCRATS on the tea baggin' bubba butt buddie right need to get a clue. Government is a business in which we are all stockholders designed and empowered to protect us, and provide us the educational and infrastructure resources that enable us to have fertile ground for capitalism to flourish in, which builds our tax base and lowers our tax expenditures. Alvin gets that like any enlightened capitalist American Democrat, and will find solutions to our problems with the mindset of a business minded administrator. Hogan is a joke, out to serve the wealthy and not give a damn about anyone else. NOgan!
To the nuts and bolts, look at Alvin's resume' True, he sounds like he's Sunday-go-to-meeting, but the red letters are ingrained in him without him polluted with the self-righteous judgmental hate of the Hoganators (as my son calls them). He says that same damn stump, and repeats himself a little-so he's not as polished a public speaker, and pings the catch phrases of that stump again and again, but he means what he says and looks you dead in the eye without his eyes shifting like liars do. He's all in.
Many people didn't vote for him because they thought he didn't have a chance and didn't want to waste their vote. Also, yes, there is voter apathy, but this is a culturally brain-dead city for the most part; which is another reason for a Republican to cut education-the uneducated don't vote.
I saw some comments by Shelton and others on FB dealing with the race issue. Yes, Jacksonville thinks in terms of the "N" word all the time (why do people use it in conversation and fear writing it down publicly, anyway? Hell, use it in context to combat it and you dis empower it) There is soft racism, and poverty keeps the cycle in place, and they know it and use it to control as they do fear and hate, or has anyone not seen the crap coming from Northeast Florida Committee for Principled Government (?) Hate-mongers, and they think it's okay, and so does their target market, who votes NOgan.
This is a town of insiders who have made what could be an amazing town into a wreck. It's like a "Wonderful Life" only Pottersville remains. 4 out of 10 kids NO HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA!!! and cutting education in the state that spends the least already is supposed to attract business how?????
Tea Baggers DO NOT KNOW what the Constitution really means. They don't know what a social contract is. It is a form of Plutocratic New Feudalism, and it will turn us into a Third World nation if we aren't careful. That might be why ethics isn't taught in schools anymore. It was our best weapon for equity and social progress.
Alvin will foster the kind of growth we need, and the rest is on us as a society. He understands the need for infill, mass transit, controlled spending, incentive based programs, you know-the stuff that works and yields good results. Welcome to the campaign, and if you take a good logical look at both candidates and still like NOgan then i suggest you pull your head out and start to remove the fecal matter from your ears.

Skot, most of us here know all about Hogan and what life might be like with him as mayor.  What we lack is a better understanding of what Alvin is all about.  Now I am speaking only for myself here, but I would prefer a more positive message from Alvin's supporters.  I think on this website that you will get more people excited about voting for Alvin by talking about the good things Alvin will do for Jacksonville.

Can you get him to come online with us and answer some questions?  We had the pleasure of such a dialogue with Jim Bailey and Audrey; and both had pretty good support here as a result.

If you want to convert at least one Hogan vote to a Brown vote you could probably do one simple thing - get Mr. Brown to paddle Hogans Creek with Noone.  We could have an Alvin Brown rally on Hogans Creek!

Noone

Doug, It would be a pleasure to paddle Hogans Creek with you, Jacob, Mr. Brown, Field, and anybody else. You are right that the river access issue is big with me and I'm not backing off one paddle stroke when I say that if you think we are getting more access and economic opportunity to the river we are getting less.

The legislative window is closing rapidly for the current administration and city council for an ordinance on the Promised 680' Downtown Public Pier, AKA-Bay St. Pier Park, AKA- Jacksonville's Downtown Tradeport Pier. And the easiest icing on the cake an ord. for Hogans Creek. The light bulb just blinks when you are under that FDOT overpass and the potential that is just there waiting for everyone.

Imagine the flotilla......

Daniel O'Byrne the brand new director of Visit Jacksonville.

Tera Meeks the brand new Division Chief of Property Management and Programming for the Preservation Parks.

Paul Anderson the brand new Director of the Jacksonville Port Authority.

Ricker with the Jacksonville Marina Mile in Dist. 14

Ron Littlepage if we mention that this will be the newest Preservation Project.

Ron Barton, Jerry Mallot, Terry Lorrince, They will be the ones in the boat with a different marketing approach to bring people Downtown and up Hogans Creek.

Robert with Robert's Eatery will be under the FDOT overpass with his Gator tent along with councilman Gaffney. 2010-856 is still pending legislation.

Gaffney will throw a football pass to Jaxson who will then water ski out of Hogans Creek to the thunderous applause of people lining both sides of the bank as we truly celebrate access to our St. Johns River our American Heritage River.

Legislation is the only way we will be allowed to participate.

City council meeting in 15 days.
Jacksonville Waterways Commission meeting in 16 days.
St. Johns River Alliance Board meeting in 17 days.

The state of Florida is watching.

My only question to Doug. Will this be a high tide or low tide? LOL. Either way with the Skiles team it will be fun.

Nice work!

This makes me just want to stay home :-(

Jimmy

I would like to disassociate myself from Skot's comments, above.  I don't see this race in those terms, at all.  And while that frame might have worked in the first election, those comments and sentiments are not helpful as we prepare to choose a new Mayor on May 17.

For me, this Mayoral election is a contest between two thoughtful and earnest public servants who offer a differing vision for Jacksonville, and who bring a different focus to solving our civic problems.  I don't think that Mr. Hogan is a boogeyman.  I don't think insulting him or his name speaks to the kind of public dialogue we should be having.

These men share some similarities.  They are both deeply faithful and religious men.  This doesn't turn me off to either of them; many in Jacksonville are religious or spiritual people.  No harm there.

Anyway, what I would propose is that people get to know Mr. Brown.  He's been the unknown to many here in this race.  I've been in his circles for the last 8 years, or so, through my work with the local party.  He's always been thoughtful and engaged in public service.  When he's been called on to solve problems, whether by Presidents or neighbors, he's rolled up his sleeves and dug into the work.  I think we need a happy warrior as our next Mayor.  Someone with a can-do attitude and a spirit to help make a difference.

I will ask the campaign to send an official representative here to speak to posters.  In fact, I'll ask for Mr. Brown himself to take part here as other candidates have done in the past.  In the meantime, Mr. Brown's website is a good place to start to learn more about the man who I'm supporting for Mayor.  Check it out.  http://alvinformayor.com/

Thanks for your comments without resorting to name calling. I voted for Audrey and as I mentioned earlier I find myself leaning towards Mr. Brown at this point. However I am still waiting for a reply from his campaign to an e-mail I sent last Wednesday asking where he might be speaking in the next few weeks so I can hear what he has to say. I understand he was at RAM this past saturday. Wish I had know since I live just up the street from there.
Hopefully he can get here on MJ and talk to members. I really want to hear what he has to say.

If I was an Audrey Moran voter in the first round of the mayor's race, there would be no doubt in my mind where to throw my support in the upcoming runoff election.  There would be nothing for me to agonize, wonder and doubt about...  The choice is rather clear.  'nuff said...

P.S. - I don't feel like painting you a picture.  You figure it out ; ) --- Go, Alvin, Go!  Um...I guess I did paint a picture... Oh, well!

Scott.

This post comes dangerously close to violating our rules of civility.

Please keep your posts polite as well as impassioned.  People can make up their own minds without a bunch of jingoistic gobbledegook.

This city is not culturally brain dead.  It is underserved by our City apparatus, and I hope every writer, singer, painter, illustrator, thinker, designer, architect, pastor, composer, dancer and choreographer in the city takes offense at casual comments like these.

The city voted against Hogan by 65%.  45% of the voters chose extremely progressive forwards thinking candidates:  Audrey and Alvin.  Rick Mullaney only managed to garner the moderates.

Please stop with the constant mischaracterizations of this city.  There is racism.  Yes.  And there is racism in every city of the south, including Atlanta and Miami.  But we have to stop letting the minority control city politics, and the type of sentiment expressed in your post is not a rallying cry.  Its a turn off.

You seem impassioned.  I suggest that you open your eyes and look around you at the new reality that has sprung up over the past 20 years.  Its time to try something new, because even with a majority of the city wanting change, the same old crap aint working.

I don't fault Skot David Wilson for his passion.  I feel a great amount of frustration over the choices that Jacksonville has made regarding its leadership and frustration over the choices that the city leaders make when choosing a direction for Jacksonville.
Yeah, he could be a bit more nuanced in his message, but I sense the palpable anger that he feels.  I hope that we can channel this emotion into real action for our great, but flawed city.

I know Skot has been working hard in this election cycle.  I don't mean to take anything away from that.  But we're moving into a "unity" phase of the campaign where Mr. Brown needs to court and win the votes of Republicans and moderates (in order to be elected Mayor).  Words matter.

QuoteMr. Brown has the experience and vision that we need to take Jacksonville to the next level

Really? He got all that experience in Washington DC, so how does that qualify him to lead Jacksonville? Brown seems like a nice guy, but he cannot win against Hogan's local experience in City Council, Tax Collector and State of Florida Legislature. Hogan has done more for the citizens in Jacksonville and Florida and his record shows.

Stephen, I am sure you will have fun looking that up for us all to see. Yet, when it comes to Brown's Florida record, the manilla folder will be a wee bit more bare than that of Mr. Hogan, eh?

Go ahead find your Tsunami of information! I am ready by the keyboard.

Better yet, why don't you go and experience it. Burn a few calories, get the feet moving, head on down to the local tax collector office and see how a few simple enhancements can make what was a burdernsome system of much more efficient.

I do not believe it matters how much Mike Hogan has done.  It matters more, IMHO, what he has done...  A truckload of manure will always outweigh a single flower.  Not that I am making any direct comparison ; )
