Gosh! That building did not look that bad.   COJ promises?   Promises made, promises broken.

Had the building been properly secured (and in this case the roof repaired,) it would not have deteriorated as it did. 

This property is a bit "unique" as moved said, not technically part of the historic district.  For whatever reason, Main Street was chopped out of much of it back in the day.

I noticed at Thanksgiving "someone" had already started to demolish it so to speak. 

The city had halted demos, except in emergency situations, this one?  Emergency? Don't think so, out of historic district (chopped out,) I believe that's why.  It went to HPC recently.

What might have been using our own local history?

A JACKSONVILLE - COULD OF, WOULD OF, SHOULD OF!

Bet you didn't think we had any history around here huh? ...In case your wondering what the hell the streetcar guy is doing with all these old gas station photos and signs, keep in mind my family is from the "Oil Patch..."  We could always get oil out of the well, but getting water, now THAT was a job!

This was at the request of the owner, which is why it happened so quickly...and it technically wasn't in the historic district. Still...I hate to see yet another building taken down

This owner has several vacant properties. One that was acrossthe street from us had the cops called on it constantly.I remember one instance the nephew came over and no one was home so he dropped pants and did his business in the front yard,then argued when the cops showed up that he just had to go,what the hell was their problem.  Another family member threatened to kill the dogs on the block, just a real nice bunch of boys. I would look for more demolitions on these properties....

The reason this area was "carved out" of the Historic District was to eliminate the property owners that did not want to be part of the historic district and had the power to perhaps prevent the area from gaining that designation.  I have also been told that the overlay could be used to require that the property owners in the excluded zones follow the guidelines anyway, but as they can not get the benefits, that is perhaps not really enforceable in the end.  It wasn't in this case.

The owner, whether you like her or not, did do the right thing by the building most of the time. It was reasonably secured the entire time I have been around Springfield.  The loss of this building occurred when MCCD got involved.  The policies, whether the real but non-existent "Formal Track" is involved or not, produced the same result.  The only difference here is that our tax dollars were not spent on the actually demolition.

This empty lot will now stand as an example of why the City's policies should be and indeed are being changed right now.
