I believe that is the site of the old JEA southside generating plant.

So does JEA still own it? Are there any plans for it? That's some prime real estate there.

Maybe we can call it the shipyards southbank?

There were different development plans ... then the real estate market tanked.
And, according to the City's website, JEA still owns it.

Yes, JEA does own it(they are 'technically' a very large landowner in the city, albeit the vast majority of the individual parcels of land they own are for the most part VERY small).  There was a megasite development plan for it before the real estate bubble burst.  The school board(the adjacent brown building) really cooked their own goose on that one, unfortunately.

The Shipyards site is prime real estate.  I really hope to be making some presentations for that site very soon.

In the meantime, the JEA site will probably be dormant for a long time.  There was some spattering of talk about making the property a multi-use city-run sports facility.... but talk was really all that was.  The Shipyards site IMO represents much better bang for the buck imho.

Q.  What is this?

The site was once part of our WWII era shipyards, it was also the north end of Flagler's FEC Railway's original Jacksonville yards. The Jacksonville Beach/Mayport branchline left the mainline just south of Nira Street, and headed out alongside (under todays) Beach Blvd. The railroad depot for 'South Jacksonville' stood along the mainline just north of Landon Street, which unlike today, crossed the tracks. The railroad yard worked the railroad coal trains off of the Mayport Coal Terminal. (The same coal that is likely the cause of the extensive and dangerous carbonization of the overland bridge) The crossing at Atlantic was the scene of a fatal streetcar vs train accident as a locomotive which was way south of the crossing, shoved a long line of cars northward toward that railroad yard. The crossing watchman nor the streetcar operator could hear the train which was rolling toward them in a thick fog... So yeah, the site has some history.

Looking along the river in downtown shows NOTHING but opportunity. There's only a few restaurants on the river (river city brew, chart house, ruth chris. Am I forgetting anything?) It's certainly an under-used resource.
