1626 Ionia Street
Saturday, September 18, 2010
9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

What needs to be done?

1.  Board and Secure (mothball)
2.  Trash pick-up
3.  Minor landscaping/clean-up

If you are game, please do a "drive-by" so you can survey what is needed. These are my suggestions:
gloves, trash bags, tree trimmer, weed-wacker, plywood, tools to cut wood
A few plants would be great to give the front some love.

1626 Ionia is a home on the endangered list. Time to give a new perception to this home.

A local artist will be providing "lost art" to this home on the boarded windows and doors.

Regardless of the city's "hopes" to demolish this home, Preservation SOS is working with the owner to properly mothball (board, secure, and monitor,) clean-up, and add lost art to the boarded windows/doors.

God willing, we can save her from the wreckless acts of the city in their efforts to "keep people safe."

Bless those of you who have contributed to the fund at Carolina Lumber.  Sammy and I are busy cutting up the pieces of plywood you have bought and will install the first boards on Wednesday.

The homeowner is getting a dumpster for us to fill.  He is extremely grateful for any help, both moral and physical, I suspect.

I appreciate the owner participating in this too. I think it makes a difference when the owner also "chips in", it shows a willingness.

Do stop by on Saturday from 9 - 12 p.m. if you are able to lend a hand.
Thanks to everyone who donated plywood to help secure and add lost art to this endangered home.

Still plenty of work to do on this property.
Do stop by Saturday and lend a hand to finish her up.

GREAT mothballing.  This block of Ionia is very, very sad.  Lots of love and color is needed!!

Team Recovery showed up in full force.  And we made a dent in the task.  Cleaned up, boarded up, swept up.  By no means is it done, but it is started.

Two guys who live in Riverside read about us on MJ and came over to take photos. Great guys who love historic homes, Scott & Fred.  Then they went to Uptown Market and bought us back lunch for 10!!

So, little Johnnie says "Miss Gloria, someone put a stick on my sandwich" and we all laughed b/c he was talking about the toothpicks.  I said "eat 'em slow boys, those are $10 sandwiches."

Oh, and the cookies. Yumm...

Hailing brought us a case of Gatorade and gave us encouraging words.

We will have several more work days before the job is done.  But little, by little.  Day by day.

This house is too good to go.  But if she goes, she'll go with dignity.

To say the least. . . . .Springfield and Preservation SOS are very lucky to have these fine men dedicate their time, skill, and heart to saving our historic homes.

Also, many thanks to the folks who donated hundreds of dollars of plywood, folks who cheered from near and afar to make this project happen, and also to you for lunch for the guys from Uptown.

JB, Strider and I just got back from a walk around the neighborhood with a tall and handsome city official who was very interested in looking at 1626 Ionia.

Sometimes I really love this city.  There are good people in city government and some of them do care what happens to a little house, on an odd street,  in a strange neighborhood.
