Bringing food, entertainment back to sports complex

QuoteA Downtown restaurant closed for almost two years will have a new name, new look and new tenants who hope to bring a splash of Irish-inspired cuisine and live entertainment to the block.

The under-construction Gas Knob Pub, located at the old Amsterdam Sky Cafe next to Veteran’s Memorial Arena, will open its doors sometime in mid-May if all goes well, said owners Michael Hennessy and Ralph Tiernan.

It's always nice when a new watering hole opens up around jacksonville.  hopefully, they will be able to open prior to the ACC baseball tournament which could definitely help with exposure and give a financial boost.  Does anyone with any more info about the Gas Knob know if they are going to have a GOOD beer selection?  After traveling around the country a little bit, I have come to the realization that there really aren't any places in town with an expansive beer selection.  I'm talking about over 20 beers on tap.  I understand that kickbacks has recently expanded their selection, but frankly I have never enjoyed going there in the past.

Yeah my experience at kickbacks is greatly affected by the crowd as well. I usually just stick to the bar area....even though you can barely see the bartenders because of the new taps...speaking of, they do have about 60 beers on tap, the most in town that I know of...so it's probably the best spot in town to sample so many beers if you can tolerate how busy it gets.

I think Raglands in 5points has about 20 or so on tap, but I don't frequent there so often so i'm not sure about the service. The only others I can think of are European Street, Mellow Mushroom, Ale House, Lynch's, not sure about Bier Garden....

THere's a place in Jax Beach called Paradise that ad one point had 100 or so beers on tap.  However, they have the 4th best beer selection in the country, or at least that's what the menu says.  That being said, I'm not sure if it's still open for business and even if it is, it's not that fun of a place to hang around.  If you bring a couple people there it could be alright but that place is perpetually a morgue.

I remember that place! I think it closed down last summer though, or maybe even before that. Their number's disconnected now. Too bad, I didn't apperciate having a variety back then like I do now.

I'm sure a few people on this board may snear at this suggestion, but I had already emailed a "chain" called yardhouse about locating a taphouse here.  They had these places when I was in south florida and all the places had about 100 beers on tap and even more bottled beers.  The reason why it was popular is because it actually had good food, also served wine and liquor and it didn't have a pub-like atmosphere (which I like).  Surprisingly, they didn't respond in a form letter, but left me somewhat optimistic that I could give them a suggestion of where they may think about finding a location.
Dear William,

Thank you so much for contacting us and sharing your vote of confidence
for a Yard House in Jacksonville.  Although we do not have any immediate
plans for a location in that area, I will absolutely share your
suggestion with our Real Estate Team.  If you wish to share additional
information regarding a particular development site, please feel free to
email us at realestate@yardhouse.com

We sincerely appreciate your kind compliments and look forward to our
next opportunity to serve you!

Best regards,

Wishful thinking on my part, but I sure wouldn't mind having a place with over 100 beers on tap in my city.

lunch will be the determining factor. Maxwell house, the shipyards, and if they can draw business off of talleyrand. Baseball won't get them much, we have the best food in minor league sports. The demographic of who goes to baseball (a lot of families with tired children, people who work the next morning on weeknights) isn't exactly who they are looking for
