I was wondering how you could volunteer for the Gulf cleanup action. Also is there age requirements, I am 17 and perfectly capable of doing many things, but they might only allow poeple 18 and older...

Florida activates oil spill information line
Gov. Charlie Crist on Thursday activated a phone line to provide residents and visitors WITH updates on the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

The line will have information on how the state is responding to the spill, volunteer opportunities and other tips.

``Florida's coastlines have not yet been impacted by this oil spill,'' Crist said. ``However, understanding that Floridians have a number of questions about the state's ongoing response efforts, the Florida Oil Spill Information Line serves as an important resource for the latest information.''

The information line, 1-888-337-3569, will be answered from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week.

I am volunteering in the Mobile Bay-Mississippi Sound area through the Mobile Bay Keepers.

Mobile Baykeeper training begins May 22 and continues until there is no need. Wildlife rescure requires specialized training that involves an exit exam.

If you're underage, you may be limited to beach clean-up before the oil washes ashore, pre-wash assessment teams, or volunteering at training centers. These too are necessary and important jobs. Some organizations may let you work with a parent or with parent permission.
