Had lunch at the Metro Diner over the weekend and sat at the counter. Saw only one chef handling food wearing gloves. All of the others in the food prep area handled food with their bare hands, sometimes reaching into their pockets to retrieve items, or wipe their hands on a dirty towel, then going back to touching the food. Once saw food scraped off the counter and added to plates. I know it can be busy there, but heck, at least make an effort to look like you are trying to meet safety standards. YUCK. I tried to find their food inspection report online, but didn't see one.

Gloves actually are not safer than bare hand contact. It is the appearance of safety to the public that makes them popular. Now as for the rest your right these are very poor practices.

QuoteAnd, yes, as with sex, the sensual pleasure of cooking is dulled when there's latex in the way.

Just waiting for Trojan to make ultra thin cooking gloves.   ;D

Thanks for the interesting links--they point out that good hand washing can be superior to glove-wearing.
I recall that during my 45-60 minutes at the counter, I didn't see one employee wash their hands even once. But I'm still here and no worse for the experience!

Since you took the time to post your observations here... I assume you also took the time to inform management of your concerns... :)
In a boat at sea one of the men began to bore a hole in the bottom of the boat. On being remonstrating with, he answered, "I am only boring under my own seat." "Yes," said his companions, "but when the sea rushes in we shall all be drowned with you."

I don't care if the chef's walking around the kitchen with toilet paper stuck to his feet, the Metro is pretty darn good.

They're certainly doing something right...

Speaking of the Metro, does anyone happen to know when the Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives episode featuring it will air?
The tourist would realize at once that he had struck the Land of Flowers - the City Beautiful!
