the real problem is that with no planning for the past 80 years it's hard to start trying to guide and contain the sprawl now. It's damn near impossible to increase population density on an infrastructure like most pf Arlington without building more apartment complexes- which so far have not proven to be the best idea.

This is a nice plan, but I just don't see when this would ever happen. It's nice to see that they are thinking about it, but I hope these aren't just empty visions

I was suprised to see the suggestion of no cruise port in Mayport.  After driving through there this weekend, that place is in a real mess and could really use a shot in the arm.  To me, it would seem that a cruise port (assuming it could be designed in decent integrated matter) could be the best and easiest way to make the vision of a vibrant community a reality.

^ Bingo!  Honestly, without the cruise terminal I don't think Mayport will see ANY major investment in our lifetimes.

Also interesting that the Vision includes advertising on bus shelters, when both the Greater Arlington Civic Council and the Arlington CPAC voted against them.

agreed...it is a glaring omission in the plan...but that's likely because the neighborhood groups spoke up...we all know the vocal folks in Mayport don't want it....but in this case, their desires should be outweighed by what is best for the larger Jax. community

Yes it looks like an intentional omission of the cruise port. No need to stir up the locals until we move forward on it but we all know it is going to be there so just pencil it in.

Honest question:  is this "vision plan" even realistic or able to be implemented?  Not to be pessimistic, but it seems like it's just mocking the area.  Like, "Here's what things could be like, but oh yeah it isn't.  Sorry."  Is there any initiative to turn these visions into reality or is it just wishful thinking?

Its wishful thinking if you don't take advantage of opportunities like a cruise port terminal when they present themselves.  Other than that, there are several public sector things that can be implemented that follow this vision.  These include modifying land use/zoning, establishing CRAs to encourage redevelopment, better transit facilities, landscaping and lighting improvements.  The mobility plan also includes money for the construction of a pedestrian overpass between Arlington Rd and Southside Blvd, which is something else shown in this vision plan.  However, the $3 million or so budgeted for it would not pay for the architectural enhancements shown on the rendering.
