Chestnuts roasting over an open fire!

Try maybe Native Sun Natural food market place, or Whole Food market off San Jose.

Go to the produce section of any Publix.
When all else fails hug the dog.

What do they taste like?  Tell us how to roast them if we don't have an open fire?  :)

I once had a recipe from an old fella named Nathaniel Cole but I think any fireplace or even a grill would do the trick. I remember the times walking around Rockefeller Center with Jackfrost nipping at my nose.
Thanks for the tips, guys. Time to go chestnut hunting. See y'all.

If you roast them make sure you cut an X into the shell or they will explode.

A nice idea for RAM, although they're wrapping up for the season in the next couple of weeks.

I spent some time in Hong Kong during the holiday season a few years back... these guys were roasting them on the street everywhere...

In a boat at sea one of the men began to bore a hole in the bottom of the boat. On being remonstrating with, he answered, "I am only boring under my own seat." "Yes," said his companions, "but when the sea rushes in we shall all be drowned with you."

You can google several recipes for roasting chestnuts and advice on how to buy good ones...  If anybody tries it, would love to hear how they turned out.

Where do the chestnuts come from?  The American chestnut tree is basically extinct.

Somewhere other than America?

I am trying to find out and will let you know when I get an answer.  (Seriously, I had nothing better to do with an ice pack on my back right now, so I phoned the Dept. of Agriculture to find out). Stay tuned.

Here's an article from today's Wall Steet Journal about chestnuts.  Talk about good timing!

Good on you, Dog Walker - thanks for the most informative article, and now I also  have to try at least one of those accompanying wines that were listed, too!
