The Gleaning Project

Every year fruit in our own back yards goes to waste.  Many of us have fruit/nut trees who produce so much produce we simply cannot harvest or consume all of it.

Sustainable Springfield is starting a project called The Gleaning Program to help with this waste.  It works like this: if you have a fruiting tree you would like assistance with, Sustainable Springfield will organize volunteers to come out and help harvest your tree. The owner keeps a portion of the fruit and donates the rest to us. We will sell the rest locally as a small fundraising effort for the non-profit and donate any other to local homeless shelters.

We would like to open this program up the the entire city, not just Springfield.

Since we are a 501c3 your donated fruit would get a tax deductible receipt based on the amount of fruit and its value.

If you have a tree you would like added to the Gleaning Program, please contact us and let us know when your tree sets fruit every year.  avsearle@gmail.com

My apple, olive, meyer lemon, orange, and grapefruit trees are still young (planted this last year) I plan to suppliment with Fig, pecan, lime, plum, and apricot trees next year. UF has some wonderful traditionally cold weather fruit trees that will do well in NFL! Add to that the new Kiwis, Blackberries, rasberries, grapes (both talble and wine), and Blue Berries, man I just can hardly wait!

I just bought new canning jars this morning...do the volunteers get a reduced price?  ;D
