JACKSONVILLE, FL -- An eight block section through historic Springfield on Main Street will be upgraded both underground and topside.

The city signed off on spending $8 million to finish a job it started several years ago when crews added improvements and a median on Main through 4th Street.

The goal now is to finish the job. The plans call for a number of changes including a median through the business district to 12th Street.

Stephen Dare says the road improvements along with more realistic store rents once again make Springfield attractive.

Dare is returning to the area with his restaurant after taking his business downtown.

"As long as real estate prices stay realistic, I think a real turn around down here, " Dare said while standing on Main Street near where his business will relocate.

Louise DeSpain heads up the Springfield Preservation and Revitalization Council. She's optimistic as well.

DeSpain talks of small businesses that have recently signed leases to fill vacant store fronts on Main Street.

"We now have the people here who want the businesses to come, that's a big thing," said DeSpain.
