Jaguars must still sell more than 13,000 tickets to avoid blackouts

My daughter went to Sunday School with Tebow a few times. She didn't even know who he was, he was THAT real.  The kid is or try's to be honest, devout, hard working, and moral, all the ingredients needed in today's warped world to bring him insults and ridicule.  I personally don't know him, have never met him and only seen 2 or 3 of his games, but as for the underachieving vultures sitting on the sidelines waiting for an opportunity for humiliation, I find myself cheering him on and hoping his performance sends us writhing in the pain of regret. Jacksonville could do much worse then a few hundred Tim Tebow's in town, but true to our own Self-denigrating form we seem to prefer a lesser class of citizen.

I disagree that Alualu is any less of a citizen. He's certainly got the humility part down pat...

Ock I compel you to research all the players drafted this year and last year. You'll find scholars, community standouts, team captains and choir boys as well as good athletes. The NEW GM scouts character as hard as he scouts talent.

Watch this vid http://www.jaguars.com/multimedia/?3587

Here's a guy that has all the morals and convictions of guy like Tebow that comes from absolutely nothing. Staying true to your morals while going without food, clothing and moving from shelter to shelter shows more personal strength than the same being raised by a preacher with plenty of means.

And though I long to embrace, I will not replace my priorities: humour, opinion, a sense of compassion, creativity and a distaste for fashion.

One of the team's rookies from last year, Don Carey, was accepted into Yale but was unable to secure the financial aid so he ended up at Norfolk State.

I think Ock may be referring to the put downs Tebow often is subjected to because of Gator fan's and the media's intense obsession with the young man.

Oh c'mon! The guy is literally worshiped across the state of Florida, hailed as maybe the best college player of all time... poor Tebow.

A compelling article about the amazing things Tebow does on a daily basis.

Ock, this is an uncharacteristically uninformed post from you.

No reasonable fan is rooting for Tebow to fail.  He's a good kid who did nothing wrong.  That really is where the story should end.  Most non-Gator/Tebow fans are annoyed, and a bit frightened, by the masses of worshipers who hang on his every move like a cult.  He might be great;  he might flame out.  We didn't need that here, especially not with the 10th pick of the draft.  We took a guy with just as much talent and less risk whose stock was rising meteorically the week of the draft.  Denver's move has been just as widely paened as a reach as was the Alualu pick, which as more information came out about who was interested in him turned out to not be a "WTF?" move after all.  The kid (Alualu) has star potential, and I'll put his devotion to faith and family against #15's any day.

As has already been said, perhaps you should take a good look at the class of players we did draft this year, because they most certainly aren't a "lesser class of citizen" than Tim Tebow; only less renowned.

Honestly, the sooner the pro- and anti-Tebow people alike get their panties unbunched, the better.  Let it go.

Incidentally, the Jaguars are setting records for season tickets sold without Tebow's help.  That is, unless you think people are going to buy tickets to all 10 games just to go to the Broncos game and root for Timmy.

^ I imagine there are more than a few Tebow fans who decided to buy tickets after learning he'd be in the opener!

Really?  When single-game tickets aren't on sale til August?  There are really Tebow fans who will shell out for season tickets to all ten games just to see one?  Maybe so, but not many.

And if there are people who are so infatuated as to do so, more power to them.  PT Barnum would be proud.

JeffreyS

Shwaz I take you do not think that was Ock's point or intense obsession was such an incorrect turn of phrase where only worshiped would do. If not those technicalities how did we differ?

Jeff my commentary was more about Ock's words that we could use 100 more Tebows in town vs under achieving vultures. I find those statements uninformed and think he would be just as pleased with the new players after some reading up on their backgrounds...

QuoteI find myself cheering him on and hoping his performance sends us writhing in the pain of regret.

Maybe after watching the Alualu vid he would feel differently... personally I've never been a fan of the rookie pay scale but in the case couldn't be happier for a guy about to come into $20 million guaranteed.

Highly unlikely there are that many people shelling out a minimum of 300 bucks for 10 games just to see Tebow ride the pine in the opener.

Quick Alualu story:

I took my 3 year old son to the early mini camp session on Sunday. He was excited to see the team in action and getting the chance to meet some of the players and coaches, including David Garrard and Jack Del Rio. The man he really wanted to see was Tyson Alualu. As we were walking back to our car, we noticed Alualu was inside the stadium gates walking back to the locker room. My son ran towards the gate and yelled “ALUALU!” By the time my son got to the gate, there was Aluala waiting for him with a big smile on his face. He cordially shook his hand, signed his hat and conversed with us for half a minute or so. He could not have been more humble.

The Jaguars are really loaded with good-character people.  It seems like there is a lingering perception from the Khalif Barnes, Matt Jones, et al. incidents that that is not the case, as it seems to come up in a number of the Tebow fans' criticisms of the team for not drafting him.  For instance, the St. Augustine Record recently ran a letter to the editor slamming the Jaguars for not drafting someone of Tebow's character and instead focusing on players who spend all their money on big cars and jewelry.  Anyone making that argument is no doubt unfamiliar with the convictions and character of players like Alualu, Derek Cox, Jarett Dillard, and so forth throughout our most recent drafts.  Then there's the humility, charitable dedication, and engagement with fans regularly seen in veterans like Ernest Wilford, Daryl Smith, Garrard, and Atiyyah Ellison, to name far too few.

This is a team ESPN recently blasted as having too many nice guys to possibly be a winner, and yet there is still a contingent that wants to paint them as a "thug" team.  (Not that anyone in this thread was saying this of the Jaguars, of course, but the discussion of the Jaguars' character in general tends to put me on that soapbox.  Really, from Wayne Weaver on down, the character and community dedication of this team is second to none in the NFL in my opinion.)
