INDIANAPOLISâ€"The Jaguars will have a top 10 draft pick for the third consecutive year, the result of having won a coin toss on Friday morning. The Jags were awarded the 10th overall selection in this year’s NFL draft; the Denver Broncos will draft 11th.

Technically, the coin toss was between the Jaguars and the Chicago Bears, who had traded their first-round pick to the Broncos for quarterback Jay Cutler. NFL procedure required the draft slot to be determined according to the original owner of the pick.

The Jaguars, Bears and Miami Dolphins each finished with 7-9 records in 2009, requiring draft-order tiebreakers to be employed. The Dolphins will have the 12th overall pick, due to a greater strength of schedule than the Jaguars and Bears. The tie between the Jaguars and Bears had to be broken by a coin toss because the two teams had the same strength of schedule.

As a result of the coin toss, the Jaguars will draft 10th in the first round, 11th in the third round, 10th in the fourth round, 12th in the fifth round and 11th in the sixth round. They don’t have a pick in the second and seventh rounds.

Nice!  Any idea whom they may be courting?

I think more than anything they're courting a trade down, given that they want to accumulate picks (and are without a second-rounder due to last year's Cox trade).  Having #10 rather than #11 should expand the trade-down possibilities.  I get the impression the Jaguars are not particularly enamored of Bradford or Clausen, so if either is on the board a number of teams may be interested in trading up into the Jaguars' spot.  However, I also get the impression that if certain premium players at other positions, such as Joe Haden or possibly Rolando McClain, are still on the board at #10 that the Jags would not trade out.

The only downside is that it was about a $2 Million dollar coin flip when considering top 10 bonus(es)!  But who's counting?

It could be a money-saver if it puts us in better position to execute a trade-down for multiple picks, though.

As an Alabama alum and fan, I have bias on the topic.  However, if Rolando McClain is available, I would be thrilled.  Anybody is going to be incredibly happy for having drafted him.  He is truly a quarterback of a defense.  He is very intelligent, he is football intelligent, and he can play the game as well as any college linebacker I have seen recently.  Although Alabama plays a 3-4, I am certain he would be an excellent 4-3 MLB to swarm to the ball and bring down the carrier.

I'm really impressed with McClain for all the reasons you mentioned.  I'd love to add more picks but I sure wouldn't complain if the Jags drafted McClain.  He'd probably fill a need, too, because I think the Jags ideally would like to start Smith and Durant on the outside, and I don't know that Ingram will be back or that Allen is ready to start.
