Everyone most likely knows about Operation New Hope, a FANTASTIC not for profit in Springfield!

ONH has added another fabulous project to their list in Springfield.

The Springfield Community Garden

The project is so successful they will be writing a grant to try and obtain additional land for the garden! This is a fantastic idea that has been kicked around in Springfield for years, and it is great to see the realization of the project. This is an AWESOME opprotunity for the neighborhood. I have contacted ONH to see how low-income families can obtain a plot. As soon as I hear I will post back here!

Hey!  It's Amanda.  Thank you for this post - I am one of the coordinator's at ONH Development of this project.  We have had such a great response from the community.

In addition to the community garden at 1425 Laura, and the community garden ONH initiated in East Jax, we have been offering lots of great programming for the entire community - such as gardening classes, cooking classes, sustainable living, etc.  The grant we are applying for is to continue the programming into the next fiscal year.

Membership is $35/annually and includes the plot, free water, free seeds, and access to all the classes/programming and the bi-monthly newsletter, Sustainable Springfield.

We are currently negotiating with the city on an additional lot in Springfield to expand the garden because it is FULL!!!  Which is great - but we have a waiting list of people we need to build more plots for.  I anticipate leasing the lot from the city soon and then we will begin additional fund raising for more construction materials.  What I need from the community are letters of support to submit with the grant application.  You can email them directly to me at avsearle@gmail.com

If anyone would like to donate monetarily to construction materials, you can visit http://wegive.org/look/project.asp?wgpID=1276

Once we get the additional lot, we will also accept donations from people/businesses who would like to sponsor a plot for a low income person/family

Yes, the garden has been a great sucess, even though I was actually seen there once or twice.   :o

Operation New Hope does a great job in Springfield. Amanda, Ray and Doug and others have worked very hard on this Community Garden project. They and this garden deserves the communities support.

This, IMHO, is what Springfield needs to start the upward path...........I am hoping this is just the beginning of what will come!
