QuoteMayor John Peyton's bid to bring artists downtown by adding lower-cost housing options got a warm reception Tuesday from remodeling contractors at the Northeast Florida Builders Association.

Peyton, who requested the meeting, has made creating a residential community for artists a top priority for his remaining 18 months in office. Artists are moving downtown to open galleries, and getting them to live near those galleries would attract downtown retail, Peyton has said.

For example, a building that has a gallery on the ground floor but a vacant second floor would be the kind of situation where renovating the upper floor for housing could attract artists.

Jeff Brecko, chairman of the remodelers council for the builders association, said the council listened to Peyton's plan with interest and will participate in future meetings to offer expertise.

"Our downtown is worthy of more traffic, and historically speaking, artist communities have been a strong urban draw," he said after the meeting.

Brecko, vice president of Aurora Custom Homes and Remodeling, said each building poses different challenges. Some obstacles are installing sprinklers, removing asbestos lead abatement and improving accessibility. He said historic buildings are granted relief from many issues related to building code requirements if the building's safety and structural strength won't be affected.

He said future meetings will focus on the demographic profile of residents and how marketable the space would be.

Peyton is meeting with different groups about his downtown plan as he works on policies to promote redevelopment, said spokeswoman Misty Skipper.

Skipper said when Peyton talked to artists during a recent Art Walk tour, "many of the artists said they would love to live downtown where the galleries are but can't afford to."

Good golly, man.

It's like he's seen the light and he's trying to cram as much in as he can before he leaves office.

Better late than never! I love it!

Its a well used political ploy. Since the majorty of American's attention span is that of a nat, he will do his best to do good so when and if he does endourse someone for whatever reason it will look better with a fresh membory of
"Well when he left he did this and this and that and YAY"

Only thing that can save Peyton is if he legalizes weed by the end of this term.

Legalize Marijuana,I need something to calm me down after I watch Fox News.

If Jesus was alive today,Republicans would call him gay and Democrats would put him on food stamps.

As the majorty of lawyers, and you did what you like to do take things Out of Context are snakes in the grass.
The context of my anti-lawyerism was toward the frivolous lawsuits which he was suggesting to have filed against you, granted I was admittedly grouping them all.

I never said anything once against Republicans, Democrats ever.

and yes the majorty of politicans are doing things for personal gain. If they gain helping or doing something favorable they will if they gain more doing not well look at bush.

Here goes another attempt at using the 680' Public Pier on the Northbank next to Berkman Plaza for the immediate creation of 10 businesses and bringing vibrancy to Dist.7 and this part of the St. Johns River our American Heritage River.

Imagine the ART container. As artists flood downtown this ART container can be used on a rotating basis for anyone who wants to display their art. It can be next to the hot dog container.

Did anyone attend when Fred Kent was the keynote speaker when Visit Jacksonville announced their new marketing name?

His idea was to create 10 things to do in a Public place and then watch the vibrancy move outward.

I emailed councilman Gaffney about this. Haven't heard back yet.

Anybody feeling it?

As the majortymajority of lawyers (grammar?), and you did what you like to do take things Out of Context are snakes in the grass.(this sentence lacks the proper number of verbs and prepositions to make any sense.)
The context of my anti-lawyerism was toward the frivolous lawsuits which he was suggesting to have filed against you, granted I was admittedly grouping them all. (verb tense agreement, run on sentence, unclear meaning.)

I never said anything once against Republicans, (or) Democrats(,) ever. (use of both 'once' and 'ever' unecessary.)

and yes the  majortymajority of politicans are doing things for personal gain. If they gain helping or doing something favorable they will if they gain more doing not well look at bush. (im sorry, this sentence is chaos. Please elucidate)
