Don't think this has been posted here, though it's been discussed somewhat on the myspringfield.org site:

Celebrate Main Street

Saturday, February 13th

This is an event to celebreate the long-awaited finshing of Main Street and the neighborhood's progress in general.

- The SPAR "tearoom" will be open at 12 Noon were refreshments will be served and displays, materials will be distrubuted.

- At 1pm a motorcade featuring city officials, including the Mayor, Sheriff, City Councilman, etc, will make it's way up Main Street. 1st Street to 12th Street, then head West to the UF Proton Therapy Institute.

- Along this route, live music, vignettes, & community groups will be stationed.

- Inside UFPTI, a 1 hour presentation of the neighborhood's progress, some future plans, and a feature on each community group and institution in the area will be shown. Refreshments, perhaps donated by local restauarnts, will be served as well.

- After the presentation, the Mayor, Sheriff, City Councilman, etc will be be asked to give a short speech on what they envision for Springfield.

* The details are subject to change, not fully finalized at this time

Here is a Channel 12 video about Main Street and the upcoming Celebrate Springfield event:

Shocking! No posts in a positive Springfield thread.

Lets keep it real.  When petty issues don't get in the way, threads tend to be positive, no matter what section of town they apply to.  Here are a few examples of "positive" threads from the neighborhood.

http://www.metrojacksonville.com/article/2009-nov-the-underappreciated-side-of-springfield

http://www.metrojacksonville.com/article/2009-jul-three-layers-expands-with-wine-bar-and-zen-gardens

When keeping it real goes right.

You are absolutely right though, there is an overabundance of petty bickering and ego's relating to Springfield issues. Just thought it was worth noting that there were no posts in a thread about a positive local news story.

Hooray Springfield!!!!!!

Perhaps its the way the story is packaged and sold. A stronger presentation could drum up more interest and stimulate more responses.

- contraversey, even manufactured, is often more popular than real, positive, relevant news.

Just a microcosm of society. Not unsimilar to riots in which, since others are looting, otherwise well-mannered individuals take part. While the majority of good citizens sit and watch the chaos.

also, see "news" organizations doing stories on Spears, Lohan, and Octomom for ratings.

In this case, SPR nastiness gets a lot of eyeballs to MJ. A lot of people that otherwise wouldn't post or visit, do.

Not orchestrated that way, just human nature.

sort of like how the Germans were under Nazi rule, food for thought.

Roger Weeder put the piece together on a whim. I'm sure there will be more detailed releases about the celebrate Springfield event and other Main Street stuff in the future.

Maybe there should be stronger focus and promotion on the Main Street enhancment project that SPAR been working on?  The concept is a pretty good one and probably as "positive" as it gets these days, given the economic conditions.  MJ would also be willing to run it on the front page (i've mentioned this to several people offline in the neighborhood by the way).  That invitation is still open.  Just supply us with the necessary info.

Oh, I wasn't responding to the video.  Most of our day readers are probably at work, so they really can't click on and watch videos.  I was just talking about the thread in general.  Its not one that's really set up to spur commentary.

The details are still being worked out and are coming in slowly over at mySpingfield.org where I've was hoping to make this front page material as well.  It has the potential to be a big deal and I want to get it in front as many people as possible since we're on relatively short notice.

Lake,

I didn't post an official announcment, sorry if I gave that impression. Just what i gathered from a recent meeting I observed.

I think they mentioned an official announcment would come shortly (ie, reaching out to organizations, including yours).
