Springfield now has its very own Paper Retriever recycling bin! The green and yellow Paper Retriever bin is located on the west side of the 1300 block of Main St. in the lot beside Valerio’s. This is a great opportunity to divert recyclable paper away from the landfill and support Springfield programs at the same time! The bin is weighed when it is emptied, approximately every other week, and SPAR receives cash incentives based on the weight of the donated paper. The City of Jacksonville provides curbside pick up of newspapers, catalogs and magazines. However, it has been reported that they can’t sell all of the paper, so some is dumped in the landfill. ALL of the paper placed in the Paper Retriever bin is recycled into newsprint. Now you can get rid of the paper clutter in your home and office in full assurance that none of the paper will wind up in the landfill! Because there is no special pick-up day, you can bring paper from your home, office or school as many times a week (or a day) as you wish.

AbitibiBowater is different from other recyclers since it does not recycle old paper for just one time use, but recycles paper again and again, for as many times as you bring them your old paper. AbitibiBowater collects the paper from the Paper Retriever bins, sorts it, ships its, processes it and sells it to newspaper publishers.

By the end of March, we want to be calling Paper Retriever to make pick ups weekly, instead of their standard every-other-week pick up schedule! Think globally, act locally, and partner with SPAR to keep Springfield and our planet clean!

Just curious, any reason why AbitibiBowater doesn't get involved with the COJ to receive the paper products that end up in the landfill?

This just came up at the HPC hearing last night as these are popping up in Riverside/Avondale also. The planning staff is sending a letter to the department at the city that handles this type thing and will be following up to make sure they are not placed in very visable areas. The idea is to have them shielded from view.

What all does Pastor Lockett's group do over on Liberty Street?
Just curious.

It is a center which offers meetings, church services, food and clothing ministry, and other types of help for people.  I have been there a couple of times and have met the pastor.  He seems like a wonderful man.

I believe that corrugated cardboard is still turned into craft paper at the paper mill at Eastport Rd and Hecksher Dr.

Tommy at the breakfast shop next door to me religiously recycles his cardboard, I will ask him where he takes it.  I do not think you may put it in these new collection boxes.

SPAR’s Recycling Bin Reminder:  Stuff the Bin This Holiday Season! As the holiday season fast approaches, please remember that you can recycle all of those holiday catalogs and mailings. The Paper Retriever program does not take Gift Wrapping Paper or Tissue Paper due to the high content of coloring that it takes to make these types of paper. It is very hard to remove that color during the recycling process. In addition to catalogs, please bring all your newspapers, magazines, school and office papers, and junk mail to the bin located next to Valerio’s on the west side of the 1300 block of Main St. Support Springfield programs and the environment! You can support your community by bringing your paper to this location only.

As the recent SPAR Speak made a point of insisting that only the recycle bin by Valarios be used, I would like to say the following.

The bin by Valarios will put some funds into the hands of SPAR Council and possible benefit some residents within the community. Recycling your paper products here certainly shows support for the neighborhood.

The bin by Pastor Lockets on Liberty also possibly benefits residents from the community as well as potentially others who have often desperate needs.  Recycling your paper products here certainly also shows support for the community.

The truth is, you have a choice and whichever you choose helps the community in some way.  Either choice is good for Springfield.
