JACKSONVILLE, FL. Residents of the First Coast are invited to celebrate revolution. On November 9, 1989 the world watched in awe as the Berlin Wall was dismantled. The historic event joined East and West Germany and essentially ended the decades-old Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union.
On November 11, 2009 scholars from Florida State College at Jacksonville and the University of Florida will discuss what happened before and after the fall of the Iron Curtain.
A welcome and introduction by Dr. Charles Closmann, Assistant Professor of History at the University of North Florida and Dr. Dirk Wendtorf, Professor of Humanities and German at Florida State College will be followed by a screening of the film Das Leben der Anderen (The Lives of Others), an Oscar-winning political and social drama set in Eastern Germany in 1984. The movie revolves around a writer and his lover, who find themselves increasingly under surveillance by the East German secret police. A general discussion will ensue after the feature presentation.
“Attending a Revolution: The Fall of the Wall” will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 11m 2009 from 5-9 p.m. at Five Points Theater 1028 Park Street. Admission is free of charge and open to the public. Reservations are requested and can be made by contacting Dr. Dirk Wendtorf at 904-646-2024 or dwendtor@fscj.edu
