Giovanni's is ceasing operation this weekend after 40+ years.

I'm sad to see them go.

The place is very unique.
WHAT?! They had some of the best food I have ever had in Jax, the location wasn't the best or most visible, but damn.

I'm not surprised. I didn't know about that store but the one in Fruit Cove has been slipping. They now serve a non- special burger. The tables often feel sticky. The empty dishes often sit unattended. Too much competition to go settle for average food and service.

Golf Galaxy at the Town Center is closing.

Didn't another big golf store close, not too long ago? At Tinseltown?

It boggles my mind that stuff at the Town Center is already going out of business. Especially in the "new phase" which is where Golf Galaxy is (was) located. Also that great big outdoors store. Seems a shame to custom build such a huge building for a store that only lasts a year or two.

yes, I think that you are correct about the golf store at Tinseltown. I'm also not sure what the name of that store was.

It also boggles my mind that stores are closing at the Town Center. I went there for the first time in months and it seemed to be packed. It's such a confusing place to go now that the newer section is open. It's not really like other "town centers" that I have gone to in other cities. The layout is so spread out, you cannot really park in one area and walk the entire center. I have been to other town centers, and they are more compact and walkable. Ours is really just a series of strip malls. Also, I was almost run down twice by drivers speeding through the parking lot and talking on their cell phones (at the pedestrian cross walks).

The new owners said the previous ones made poor location and real estate choices and therefore the under performing stores had to be closed.

SJTC seems to fill their vacancies pretty quickly.  CompUSA is relocating their Southside Blvd. location to the former American Backyard spot.

In order to get all the permits approved, they had to agree to add as much sprawl as possible :)

I agree, it's a little weird now.  There was phase 1 of the TC and then phase 2 and then "2A".  While they don't fit together perfectly, there's at least some flow to them.  But the main TC basically turns it's back on the Publix phase and the Best Buy/ToysRus phase.  Plus with all those restaurants getting built on Gate between the CVS and Costco, the traffic just isn't going to move through there.  I work right near the Deerwood Park/Gate intersection and a lot of the time it's faster for me to hop on JTB to 9A north and try to get to the TC from the UNF side.  I read on another forum that the Gate/Skinner Lake intersection (where Bonos & Costco are) was temporary and they were going to make some changes to it eventually.  Any truth to that?

I will say, the Town Center has done a pretty good job of keeping tenants in their stores.  I remember thinking 'oh how the mighty have fallen' when the Dollar Tree opened up, but they appear to be willing to open up to businesses they probably won't have gone anywhere near 2-3 years ago.  That's the benefit of being a 'high end' mall; you can go for some of the 'lower' stores.  If you already have those stores and they leave, then you're out of luck.

Anybody know if the Shula's inside the Sheraton closed? I am on their email list and the one I got today is for the Tallahassee location as the default. When I clicked on the link in the email, the Jacksonville location is gone.

What are you talking about? They designed it so you could see all their neat parking lots... I like the big one with the lines....

This is posted on the Jax restaurant web site while the phone number is "no longer in service".  I would say they are closed.

They should have relocated to the Hyatt Downtown after Plaza III closed.

Bulls Barbque on Baymeadows closed. The economy has just killed everybody. But with them I dont understand something. They closed at 5 and were not open on the weekend. however, they were ALWAYS packed. Why didnt they just extend their hours and open up on the weekend to close the gap financally?
