Sounds like the theater had been losing money for years. Its good that the building won't be razed. Hopefully, they can find a good tenant for the adaptive reuse of the space.

I have been to countless cities where such theater buildings were preserved, including the marquee, and successfully repurposed.  Should be no shortage of such possibilities at the San Marco.  Still, sad to not see it function as it was designed for, especially after they invested in renovations.

Do I see a big screen sports bar in the future  :D?  One example, Wreckers, at the Gaylord Palms Resort in Orlando, has 37 foot screens on par with those of a small theater like the San Marco.  Can carry one event or multiple events, at the flip of a switch.

The old State Theater in St. Pete is what first came to mind for me.

Movie theater turned concert venue.

Probably saw 50+ concerts there as a teenager.

Such a cool spot.

I remember the last time the theater changed hands a few years ago Tim from Sun-Ray was upset they weren't given an option to purchase the theater themselves. Hopefully they get a shot at this time since their other expansion plans haven't come to fruition.

We've got an example of that in town at the Murray Hill Theater.

Do you think any of our "stellar" local journalists have thought to ask Tim at the Sun-Ray if he might be interested?  (My guess ... No)

Wonderbird at the beach apparently closed too, according to Reddit.

San Marco Theater, Southern Roots, Crane Ramen, Wonderbird, Adventure Landing, Beach Road.

Sad to see so many of these local/local-ish establishments that give the city its identity closing up shop in the last few months.

I'll agree with half of those.

Don't worry. For every 1 local biz we lose, we gain 2 storage facilities, urgent care centers and dollar stores.

Another really sad one.

Saw Habitat for Humanity store trucks taking out furnishings from the San Marco this AM.  Looked like the theater seats.  Not wasting anytime setting the building up for a new tenant.

Wouldn't be surprised if Karpeles Museum here was also picked to close over attendance.  I wonder what it was?  Seemed it was never fully promoted.  If all our museums would join together to cross-promote each other it would be a win-win but, typical of Jax, no one takes the initiative.  I see such promotions done in big and small cities but not here.
