I was just browsing MJ and found a website with old pictures from 5 Points, Riverside, Avondale, etc.. And I stumbled upon this image of Frank's Barbershop!

I was born in 1982 at NAS JAX, and grew up in Riverside. Most of my time growing up was spent in the 5 Points Deli, which I unfortunately don't have any pictures of, which is now known as Gina's Deli. I think it was a library or business before that? But seeing that picture of Frank from back in the day brings back all those memories. I would run around 5 Points and into the different shops all the time, it was fun for me. I'd first go visit Frank, who by the way, gave me my very first haircut, and several more after that. He would always make me squirm when he'd shave the back of my neck, and I still still remember sitting on the adjuster so he didn't have to bend down! I remember a bunch of older guys, newspapers everywhere, pictures, and classical music playing. The smell of aftershave, and talks of the good 'ole days. Other places I used to run off to were Abernathy, Kelly's Gas Station, Edge City, and 5 and Dime.

While spending my time at the deli, I'd never have anything better to do than to talk to some of the people who came in. I remember my Uncle Murray, as I called him, since we both have the same last name but weren't related, and my Grandmother, would always drink coffee and read the paper. A few people would come in and join them to talk about stuff, and I'd just sit around twiddling my thumbs. Artis Gilmore & Ed Austin were regulars, and very nice guys, and cool for putting up with me!

So, I just wanted to share a bit of my 5 Points experience as a kid, and hope that someone here will have tons of pictures from the 80's, 90's, and even older so I could reminiscence!

That dime store was fabulous.  My husband's family owned Bremer Brace which is still working in Five Points. Going to the newsstand or the shops or Hargraves restaurant was a daily occurrence.

I remember buying so many decks of cards from that place, and all the women there knew me from when I was born lol. I really hope someone here has pictures of more than the Club 5 side of 5 Points. Those are the first pictures of Franks Barbershop from the older days I've EVER seen.

That Schinn bicycle outside the shop is cool too. Wish I still had mine. Hmmmm, the good old days.

Does ANYONE have pictures?! I'm starting to think that every spot in 5 Points has been photographed except the old Deli! :(

In a swamp, at the far end of the HORSE-CAR-LINE was a picnic ground called 5-Points (about 1884)

The Landscape isn't the same, here we see Brooklyn in the foregound and Riverside in the background...See anything familiar? (Post War of Yankee Aggression)

Riverside "at the bend" the Great Memorial Park would be just to the right, AFTER we fought WWI!

By the Great Florida Boom and the end of WWI, Riverside/5-Points was respectable (about 1918)

Riverside Park at 5-Points, from a view I've never seen before.

HOW SWEET! Whilst digging for 5-Points/Riverside, I unearth a JTCO semi-convertable streetcar. LAKELANDER and I were right in our guess that they did NOT run in the street here either! Note the grass and side-of-the-road-running, which seems to be a trademark of our old system - YEARS ahead of it's time in THAT thought!

Another view of the Riverside Park, Gee where is that bridge today?

Anyone know if this building survives? Wow, what a house it would make, Riverside Police Station!

COULDN'T RESIST THE DESIGNS BY H. J. KLUTHO ADVERTISMENT!

Does anyone know if the Apostles or Deciples are still buried in Riverside?

Ock, thank you quite kindly sir! Those pictures were actually quite pleasant to see!
Seems a lot of businesses exists on former swamps, Roosevelt Square anyone?

Here's something for you Ock:

It's hard to tell from this pic, but that is the Riverside Police Station. It is located at 1041 S. Mcduff, next to the fire station.

Frank was a top notch barber! I always went there while it was open! Great picture. Now I go to Jun's barber Shop in Arlington, specifically because Jun cuts my hair similar to the way frank did. Jun is great, too. Even though Frank's was in 5 Points (Riverside), I've actually seen him in Arlington, at the grocery store that used to be Albertsons but is now Publix, on Merrill Road.

I remember thinking:" I have never seen so many doll heads in one place!" ah yes Petersens was a cool place...any color button or thread you could imagine and a great place for a cheap Halloween costume if you only had a few bucks to spend.
Does anyone remember what Fans and Stoves was?...I have heard A&P,Kroger, and Winn Dixie.
Also what was the store that was probably in Nicotines before...had "The Pain Cave" piercing salon inside.(Back When "Saturday night Seduction" was at Club 5.) remember Raven? and the Cage dancers? :-X

l can still SMELL Petersen's; at 5 points and San Marco.  Each had its own distinctive, not unpleasant, aroma. Lived on Dellwood when we first moved to Jacksonville from South Georgia. To me, the whole area was just fascinatingly urban.

Every Christmas, my uncle tells the story of how he would go down to the Peterson's Five and Dime on a Saturday on the bus, and come back 4 hours later with everyone's presents spending a quarter.

He also once bought a Lee Adams painting for 10 cents.  My family was close to him as they lived just around the corner and my other uncle would clean up around his studio from time to time when Mr Adams was busy painting the World's Fair murals.

Scarlett, I do remember a dusty "northern attic" type smell at Petersens..not quite as musty as dusty, southern humidity,15 year old stock..dry rotted beams?
I also remember Jim? from FUEL making a tribute board, actually quite large (5'X15'?) hanging above the doorway made from buttons and other stock he inherited from the sale...He joked about having a large Garage stuffed full with the rest of the Doll heads and stuff.

I think back on why I never took a photo of the place with my trusty Nikon FM SLR that was with me frequently at the time...
Well like everyone else,I thought they would be around forever..I know..typical JAX excuse. :-[

Let this be a lesson.
