Wal-Mart to close 269 stores as it retools fleet

Wal-Mart said Friday it will close 269 stores across the globe, including 154 in the U.S. The world's largest retailer also will open as many as 405 stores globally in the coming fiscal year, as it shifts its focus toward Supercenters and Neighborhood Markets in profitable locations.

In all, 16,000 employees will be impacted by the store closings, about 10,000 of whom are in the U.S.

The domestic store closures will mostly impact the company's Walmart Express stores, which account for 102 of the closings. These small stores, which are comparable in size to a dollar store, had been in pilot since 2011. They were rebranded as Neighborhood Market in 2014.

Also domestically, Wal-Mart will also close 23 Neighborhood Market stores, 12 Supercenters, seven stores in Puerto Rico, six discount centers and four Sam's Clubs.

The clauses Walmart puts in the lease agreements for the Neighborhood Markets can be challenging to landlords.

- no liquor stores in same strip mall
- no dollar stores in same strip mall
- no convenience stores (7-11) in same strip mall

So while landlords like to see a decent anchor in their properties, Walmart chases away any other tenant they consider a competitor.

2 locally owned businesses at Atlantic and San Pablo had to leave to accommodate Walmart's demands.

I am no Walmart fan, but I actually have discovered that Walmart ships things to Alaska without over exaggerated shipping costs. I had an item shipped to me that weighed 24lbs, it was only $8 to ship made it in seven days. Pretty darned amazing. Considering I ordered something else from another retailer the same day, they charged me $50 to ship for a smaller package and still haven't received it.

Interesting, I'll have to watch the strip mall near me that has a Neighborhood Market, because it has a dollar store in it - and I think they opened about the same time.

WM has a healthy rep for closing stores that have any outspoken labor.

It's very hard to believe that some of the metros is having Walmart close. Denver, Portland, Chicago, Los Angeles, Houston etc. If I had to guess, it's more than just 'these are underperforming stores'. Maybe crime could be a factor (shop lifting etc)?? I'm just throwing it out there.

I know a guy who ordered his new garage from Menards. A week later a lumber truck showed up with all of the precut lumber and shingles. He put it up himself.

I have been to all of these big box, Fred Meyer, Meijers, Menards. Menards is more a tuned to the do it yourself set. Fred Meyer and Meijers compete more closely to WalMart and Target.

H-E-B is a competitive threat to Wal-Mart in Texas. Notice all of the Texas Wal-Mart closings, by far more than any other state. H-E-B is really good, nice prices also.

Looks like to me that the headline is pretty misleading. Supercenters are fine, which is Walmart's bread and butter, but whatever "Walmart Express" is, that has been an absolute failure. They also really do need to rename the Walmart Neighborhood Market since many people won't go in there just because it says Walmart.
