LENNY CURRY CONDEMNS ANTI-HRO FLYERS, BOMB THREAT AS "LOWEST FORMS OF HUMAN BEHAVIOR"

November 23, 2015  By A.G. Gancarski   Facebook   Twitter   Google +  Linkedin  Pinterest

In an exclusive interview with FloridaPolitics.com on Monday morning, Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry condemned as the "lowest forms of human behavior and bigotry" recent bomb threats and Klan flyers targeting the community conversations about potential expansion of the Human Rights Ordinance to LGBT people.

Saying that "public safety is my top priority," Curry noted the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, with which the mayor has been in frequent contact, "tracked down and made an arrest" of the man who phoned a bomb threat into the Florida Times-Union regarding the future "community conversations" about HRO expansion.

...

If you've been following this story, it's been pretty disgusting. Anti-HRO advocates are more or less making the case for why the HRO is needed.
Do you believe that when the blue jay or another bird sings and the body is trembling, that is a signal that people are coming or something important is about to happen?

Everyone should have a voice, but this is not the way to do it.

We are way above that now.

Oh, wait, I thought the Syrian refugees were supposed to be the threat to Jacksonville

I guess we're going to have to do a more thorough background check of men with beards.

When do you expect Curry to send a letter to Rubio?

It's hard to keep up with all the stories of hate.  But here's the latest on the bomb threat. Basically another outstanding example of the "friendly" folk of the City of Jacksonville. I'll be so thankful early next year when we pass and sign the HRO into Jacksonville's ordinance code. People like Mr. Manses and the KKK Dragon, nor the people who stand with them, speak for Jacksonville.

Now more than ever we must work for equality. Sheriff Williams won't allow these people to disrupt or harm us as we follow Mayor Curry's process this year and head into the City Council in January.

QuoteAccording to the arrest report, Manses stated the bombs would "kill all the LGBT *******... I recommend that you ******* just not show up, because if you do you're going to die. This is a ****** bomb threat."

Has there been confirmation that the HRO will be passed and signed early next year?  If so, why are the meetings to discuss it continuing?

We're all mad here!

There's no confirmation of anything in politics until the ink is dry.  The meetings to discuss the HRO continue because this is the process that Mayor Curry has laid out.  The Council (and certainly Council leadership) have said they will wait until after the Mayor's process to take up the bill, presumably out of respect to the Mayor.  This gives pro-equality advocates a chance to educate the community on the issues, especially the greatest need: to make this law fully-inclusive of sexual orientation AND gender identity and expression.

Nothing about this is a slam-dunk.  Although the KKK, the bomb threat, and the vitriol of the opponents all help to make our case, we still need 10 Council votes, would love 13, and a strong statement from the Mayor by his signature.  I don't see any abbreviation to this process and wouldn't expect a final conclusion until February or March.

No...just no. People that simplify the problem with this image are truly missing the point.
Beside , what is it you see in the guy on the right? An American holding a gun and a flag? Both constitutionality protected actions. You don't have to agree with either of them, but censoring him would be no different than censoring a gay pride parade, which is of course wrong.

So please, stop posting this image, it's never on topic.

^ while I agree the cartoon is too simplistic, please help me understand where in the Constitution is the specific protection for individuals to carry automatic pistols?

The guy on the right is Dylan Roof, isn't it? The cartoon (as I understand it) is making a point about how we are labeling Muslim refugees as "terrorists" yet don't bother to worry about the terrorists that are actually killing Americans. No one bothered to label Dylan Roof a terrorist, even though his actions most certainly fit the definition.

That said, gun-toting neo-confederate racists are just as worrying and just as 'radicalized' as your garden-variety jihadist.
