• Country Cabin, 3646 Blanding Blvd

QuoteAn inspector with the Florida Department of Business & Professional Regulation's division of hotels and restaurants closed the restaurant June 10 after finding about 39 live roaches: One was on a wall by a walk-in cooler; the manager killed it. One was on a wall by a triple sink; an employee killed it. Three were on table legs in the server area; the manager killed them. About 24 live roaches were on a shelf holding clean dishes; a cook took the shelf outside. Ten live roaches were on gaskets in two coolers containing food; the manager killed them.
At a reinspection that afternoon, the inspector cleared the restaurant to reopen.

• Los Loros Mexican Restaurant, 5210 Baymeadows Road

QuoteAn inspector closed the restaurant June 10 for roach violations and six other high-priority violations. Eight live roaches were seen in the crack in a wall behind a clean utensil table; three were in a corner behind a prep table; one was seen on a wall in a storage room for cooked tortilla chips; and roach droppings were seen along cracks where a wall meets the ceiling in the three-compartment sink area.

Do you know if La Nopalera in San Marco ever got/gets shut down for roach violations? I always used to see roaches walking across the walls - yet I still ate there. I don't think there was ever a time I ate there and didn't see at least one. One time we were there and a roach fell from the ceiling and landed in my wife's lap. That was the last time we ate there.

Also - there were always rat dropping on the shelf in the men's room. It was a fairly high shelf, but I'm 6'6" and it was at eye level for me.

That's really disturbing.  This wasn't one single roach that might have happened in there, this was (IS) an infestation.  People's food is cooked there and a few hours later the infestation is forgotten???  In my mind I'd picture them being closed for a week or two while observations were made to see if ANY more roaches were found or hatched.  But, then I read Adam's post and want to throw up :o

Guess it can happen anywhere, but I took my wife to the Jacksonville Brewing Company on the riverfront for our anniversary and I'll be damned if the beer samples they bring out didn't have a fly floating around in it! Just makes you wonder if it crash dived into the brew whilst in transit to the table, or if the fly was doing a submarine imitation in one of the brew tanks?

It was really gross. I've not been back - but it's totally possible they've cleaned up their act.

You can tell the people on this forum who have never worked in a restaurant - they're all freaked out by bugs :) Sadly, every restaurant has some sort of violations. Some are dumb (no lid on trash can) some are serious (raw stored with cooked meat).

Here's where you can look up your favorite restaurant:
https://www.myfloridalicense.com/wl11.asp?mode=0&SID=

For example, here's Bistro AIX's recent inspection, which had 13 violations and still met inspection standards:
https://www.myfloridalicense.com/inspectionDetail.asp?InspVisitID=5405395&licid=5921081
I'm not picking on Bistro AIX, they're better than most.

If a restaurant gets shut down though, be vary scared!

I'm guessing you're referring to me.  My wife and I actually worked in a bunch during HS & college and neither of us can remember ever seeing a roach.  The worst thing either of us remember was an ant infestation by the front door.  Granted these were up north, but there's still roaches up there (and they're not the "clean" ::) Palmetto Bugs).  Those stores and cities took pest control very seriously.  And, we were probably selective with where we chose to work.  I can't even imagine working at a restaurant with roaches climbing around.  I'd be out the door.

So, anyway, there are clean restaurants and fast food places.

I wasn't referring to anyone specific, but I'll respond specifically to you :)
I think it's difficult to find a restaurant in Florida without the occasional roach. And of the inspector finds it on their day they must report it.
Heck, I can't think of 1 place I've lived in that hasn't had the occasional critter, and I'm fairly clean. Borderline OCD even.
So for a restaurant to have a few bugs in the south with the doors open constantly is not a huge deal. Very different than up North. But if there's a health department shutdown I say run.
You probably don't want to disclose anything personal so I won't ask you where you work, but I challenge you to use that link and find me a restaurant that didn't have any violations.

We worked in these places a few years ago, but I just typed Wendy's into the search and the first one that came up was "FP-144" and I went back through all of their inspections and there were zero (0) roaches found.  The inspector did find violations for other things during inspections, but I was specifically talking about bugs and they didn't document one instance of finding them.  Maybe I'm just lucky and found the only clean restaurant but I don't think so.  I think some places have better managers, staffs and procedures than others.  Wendy's has a good reputation, which is why I chose them.  I purposely didn't choose a Greasy Spoon.

Bugs can happen and stores should take every precaution.  Those that are infested should be closed until it's shown that there's no adults and no larvae present.

I can deal with the idea of the occasional roach. But when you look across the room and see three or four walking on the wall, that's gross. When they climb on the back of your chair or fall into your lap from the ceiling - that's just wrong.

Not me.  If I saw one I'd be gone and on the phone.
