Abandoned Jacksonville: Coca-Cola Bottling Company

When traveling on the forgotten side streets of Jacksonville's older neighborhoods, one can't help but have a bit of "factory nostalgia" due to the eerily quiet ruins of industrial sites that once buzzed with activity. Here's a story of the rise and fall of a Jacksonville bottling factory that represents the early 20th century manufacturing history of Coca-Cola and Pepsi: The Springfield Warehouse District's Coca-Cola Bottling Company.

A map showing where the site is might be helpful.

No plans that I'm aware of.

118 East 14th Street (Mehlas Warehouse - 1926) was purchased by William C. Blake in 1991.

2334 Market (Coca-Cola Bottling - 1926)was purchased by William C. Blake in 1994.

2402 Market Street (Mavis Bottling - 1927) was purchased by Bealea Corporation in 1997.

Here's the other former Coca-Cola Bottling building in Springfield.  It's located at 520 East 8th Street and Coca-Cola occupied this space from 1913 to 1916.

I remember touring a Coca Cola bottling facility in the late Sixties where I lived.  Massive mechanical contraptions spooling empty bottles all over the place and was it hot! They were running those empties through the washer complex so they could be reused.

I asked them why they were located where they were (on the main highway)and the manager said because they needed an continuous supply of water and that the city water main from a nearby lake ran next to the building.

The building is gone now. Coke left the facility in the late 70's as plastic replaced glass and it sat empty for 20 years until the city finally demolished it.
