Abandoned, boarded-up house gutted in Memorial Day fire

QuoteA boarded-up house in the 300 block of East 16th Street suffered massive damage Memorial Day afternoon when a fire gutted parts of it, according to the Jacksonville Fire and rescue Department.
A passing police officer spotted the fire at about 2:50 p.m. at the 2-story home at the corner of East 16th and North Liberty streets and called it in. The house, subdivided into apartments, was boarded up and without power.

Multiple fire units, including a bucket truck, handled the fire as police shut down parts of East 16th and 17th streets as well as North Liberty Street. Authorities said the cause of the fire is unknown at this moment, which is why the Fire Marshal's Office has been called in to investigate.

No one was found inside the home after firefighters had to break their way in to battle the blaze.
