Another Evening full of broken ½ ass Jacksonville

Julio Iglesias just wrapped up his performance in the Times-Union Center Moran Theater. About ½ of my Colombian-Bolivian-Argentine... friends were there and came home to report on the experience!

Just Great Jacksonville.

Carpets were torn out in sections, or just ripped. The whole place looked like it hadn't seen a sponge in some time according to another. During the concert Julio continually sent signals to the sound booths but to no avail. There was a strange reverb-echo that threw everyones ear off and caused them to sit sideways! Finally near the end of the show in mid song, he simply stopped and looked to the sound guys on each side and said, 'Guys, YOUR KILLING ME UP HERE! Before you weren't doing anything and it was fine, now your plugged in and it's killing everything. STOP! Just stop whatever your doing and we'll get through this.

One of the ladies went to the bathroom and was told by one from  a group of employees, 'If I were you, I'd go back in, the guy was supposed to be finished 20 minutes ago!'

Julio was also likely put off and referenced the time and told the crowd, don't worry folks... I'LL DO IT MY WAY!

Iglesia's dad lived in Jacksonville BY CHOICE during the 10 years before his death, Julio himself loves our city, but this absolutely speaks volumes to the decay we've witnessed. Could it be the hard times that have fallen on the Newspaper Industry is making a way for a future MJ PERFORMING ARTS CENTER?

Hmmm. I was there last week for War Horse and regularily there for the Broadway Series and Jax Symphony and have not seen these horrid conditions.  Now could the entire center use a bit of updating and a spit and polish sure, but not so horrible I would go on a rant about it.  Hopefully the city will give some attention to the Center for updating and general cosmetics in the next few years but we know Jax has a habit of building and then neglecting.

The question on the sound is who was doing it?  Shows often bring their own sound systems and sound men. They set up their systems and attempt to tune them to the hall. Often there are odd spots.

However if the installed system was used it was tuned and "holes" were filled in the surround sound system under the balcanies and other places. Delays were set and it worked great.  But that was in 1997. Chances are it needs some up grades.

I was thinking the same thing, Overstreet. I concur that the facility probably could use a refresh, however it's pretty rare for a name performer to use the house sound system; they almost always use their own system.

I was just there for the comedy show not even two months ago.  Its not that bad. That was very exaggereated.  I actually was shocked about how nice it still looks. And this is from someone who is VERY visual because I love design in every aspsect and Im very detailed.  I also concluded it just need some fresh paint, and maybe some upgraded seats. There is no where to put your drink if you buy one, because there are no cup holders. Thats the only complaint I had. Otherwise it was just fine.

The main thought on those seats in both the Jacoby and the Moran theaters was sound of the seats. They were wanting a seat that wouldn't THYUMNP when you stood up and the seat tilted up. It is mainly a symphony thing..............quiet.  I'm sure it was not a problem during the Santana concert when it first opened. (ie amplified concerts)  The cup holders make it more of a movie theater than a concert hall. Just think about other places you've been. Modern movie theaters always have cup holders, but presemium theaters and concert halls normally don't.

To me the main thing that needs updated are the restrooms. I don't think they did much to update those at all when renovated.

I'm gunna have to guess that Julio brought his own sound guys.
When you're as big an act as he is, you hire people to do that so you can be consistent from city to city.

Give me Florida Theatre any day over TU center.  You can actually talk to a helpful person in the box office at FL Theatre.  TU center has a box office but if you even try to get service you will be offered surly attitude and instructions on how to call Ticketmaster.  Why even have a line to the box office if that's the service they provide?   I avoid that place whenever I can.

The box office at the Times Union Center is only for the Symphony. Anything else and they will refer you to to Ticketmaster at the Arena. And they have always been extremely pleasant to me and explained the situation.

SMG has a nationwide plan to run down all their facilities...this is their business plan.

I do recall that when the TU Center was built, there was some value engineering and corners were cut on the acoustics side.

That being said, SMG absolutely sucks.
