Food Bank Got Fired

Lutheran Social Services, which runs the Jacksonville-based Second Harvest food bank, has been terminated as a member of Feeding America, the national network of food banks.

The termination, which stemmed from a contract dispute and took effect Tuesday, will mean the loss of the Second Harvest name and food and funding donated to the network from across the country, among other things...

Feeding America spokeswoman Maura Daly said: "We will be working with community leaders to establish a new Feeding America food bank to serve the greater Jacksonville area."

I won't pretend to know what went wrong here and/or the ramifications of such "firing"--but I will say that my wife worked for Bruce Ganger and I've met him a few times--and he did a great job at Second Harvest. I read a few articles on jacksonville.com about the potential firing, and it placed a lot of blame on leadership. I think said issues run a bit deeper.

In January the national network terminated the membership of Lutheran Social Services, citing more than a decade of noncompliance in inventory control, record-keeping and facility issues. Feeding America also wanted the food bank to be an independent, standalone operation rather than one of the local agency's multiple ministries. Both Lutheran Social Services and Feeding America refused to provide a copy of the report with more details on the noncompliance

I won't pretend to know what went wrong here and/or the ramifications of such "firing"--but I will say that my wife worked for Bruce Ganger and I've met him a few times--and he did a great job at Second Harvest. I read a few articles on jacksonville.com about the potential firing, and it placed a lot of blame on leadership. I think said issues run a bit deeper.

Bruce, Kimberley and Tia were all freaking awesome. There is a backstory, so take all of the finger pointing with a grain of salt. Bruce is now running a different food bank, Feeding Northeast Florida.

We ran into him a few weeks back. He looks happy as ever. Good for him and congrats on the new job.
