With support from executives of Jacksonville's independent authorities, Mayor Alvin Brown urged the city to rally in support of the Jaguars as the team takes the national stage Thursday night at EverBank Field.

The Jaguars will host the Houston Texans in a primetime NFL game, and the independent authorities and the City of Jacksonville urged the community to show its support of the home team. The NFL Network will broadcast the game and put Jacksonville on display again as a topflight site for major football games and other sporting events.

"The Jaguars undoubtedly will bring everything they have to win the game, and our city should step up, too," Mayor Brown said. "As executives of government agencies, we want to show the national audience that our Downtown and our community embraces being a top destination for football and events. Our residents and businesses have a great opportunity to enjoy festivities at EverBank Field."

If there is not a camera on Brown, he doesn't exist.  This lovely information is on the FRONT of the COJ.net website, also known as the Mayor Alvin Brown website, but like everything in this town does not already belong to him anyway....

Didn't Peyton do similar things when he was in office? I remember him declaring a day "Teal Monday" for a MNF game.

Haha, Mayor Alvin Brown Presents Berklean Immaterialism.
Do you believe that when the blue jay or another bird sings and the body is trembling, that is a signal that people are coming or something important is about to happen?

You know its always interesting how Jacksonville over hypes the national spotlight idea, if its not a team most nfl fans want to see then people don't really give a damn. I'm always curious to know what the ratings are not only for Monday Nighters, but also these Nfl network Thursday games. Both the Jags & Texans suck & need to improve.

Ratings will likely suck.  Two bad teams and up against a live performance of "The Sound of Music" featuring Carrie Underwood...

Not likely, they will suck.  Two bad teams playing on NFL network , on a Thursday night. Nevertheless, you should always attempt to put on your best face for the camera.

The mayor urging citizens to drop everything and attend a football game is one of those quirky, uniquely Jacksonville things. Peyton did it. Godbold did it for several NFL preseason/exhibition games in Jacksonville. Hans Tanzler did it for the AFL All Star games. Hell, even John T. Alsop placed an open letter to the city in the Jacksonville Journal in 1926, politely urging local businesses to close their doors so that employees and shoppers could attend the Jacksonville All Stars first (and next-to-last) professional game against Red Grange and the Chicago Bears.
