Hi. Please keep your eyes open for a brown, female lab mix. She goes by the name of Molly. She’s approx 3 years old. She has a black collar on (no tags or chip--lesson learned!!). Molly was last seen May 28th. She wandered into a pawn shop at 1744 N. Main Street in Springfield. The pawn shop owner didn’t know what to do with her and handed her off to a customer. The customer was ‘short, Hispanic male’ but there’s no other info for him so we have no way to get in touch with him. If you do see Molly (or have her) please call (904) 349-8671. Thank you!! :-[

BTW: If you ever do find a stray, you can contact SACARC.ORG (Springfield Animal Care and Rescue Club), or call 630-CITY and report a found dog so he can be taken to the shelter for pick up. And of course, always chip your dog and have with tags phone numbers!

I THINK, I'm not sure, that I saw this dog yesterday, on leash, with a gentleman walking along 8th St. on the Eastside, between Talleyrand Ave. and the MLK/8th overpass around 3pm, Thursday the 30th. I'll keep an eye out.

SACARC is a good option, but I would be hesitant to call the city for any animal that you can safely approach. An exceedingly cute dog like Molly would of course be adopted quickly if the owner was not found, but others may not be so fortunate. You can call them and give them info on the dog and your contact info so the owner can find them if they are looking. Also post on other sites that the owners might look. If you can't foster it for a time, you can probably find a friend that is willing or find a good rescue, but I wouldn't recommend putting the dog's fate in the hands of a shelter that may at some point have to put it down.

Most importantly, chip AND tag. Your dog needs to be Rabies-tagged by law anyway, so you might as well throw something with their name and your number as well. A dog with a tag and chip gets returned in a day if not a couple hours. Finding a dog without either reduces my motivation to find the original owner, as I (perhaps unfairly) make a judgement about the owner of an 'unclaimed' dog. This goes double if the dog is of age and not spayed/neutered.

I hope you get her back speedily. Sorry for the diatribe, as it sounds like you learned your lesson, but I still felt some shaming was in order.

Dog Walker

Petsmart, Pet Supermarket and, I think, Wal-Mart all have self-serve engraving machines where you can make tags for your pets for a few bucks.  There are several sizes and styles and the engraving won't wear off.
When all else fails hug the dog.

I think Springfield is going to come together and help find this pup!

Molly's dad is a friend of mine.  The story has taken a sad - and infuriating turn.

"Molly update: there is a good chance she is at the pawn shop on Main Street. They are closed for the night and no answer on their phone but the caller said they had a dog that matched her description and a found dog sign up. Promising. Thank you for all the help and support!"

But then:

"I'm so confused. Why would anybody take in a dog and within 24 hrs just give a dog away to a complete stranger! Half a dozen people running around the entire neighborhood looking for her and posting signs and you just let anybody take her home. You might as well just have let her roam the neighborhood. They are two blocks away from my house, she had a better chance of just coming home!"

Thank you for the tip. We checked the area and found a dog that looked similar. We are in the process of updating the flyer and will hit that area hard, just in case it was really Molly. Thank you so much for your help!
