Sorry about the double post.

A new nightlife venue is being developed at 115 W. Adams St., next door to Pho noodle bar. “The Volstead” will be an “upscale bourbon bar with a 1920s theme".

In a boat at sea one of the men began to bore a hole in the bottom of the boat. On being remonstrating with, he answered, "I am only boring under my own seat." "Yes," said his companions, "but when the sea rushes in we shall all be drowned with you."

Is a 10 year lease standard for a new business? bars are risky. It seems long but I'm not an expert.

Looks like this place is going to open soon.

I'm looking forward to another happy hour option downtown.

From the article linked in aaapolito's post:

QuoteThe addition of a new Downtown nightlife destination cleared a hurdle Thursday when a waiver was granted for a liquor license for "The Volstead."

The city Downtown Development Review Board unanimously approved a waiver of minimum requirements for liquor license location to allow the use, which is 750 feet from First Baptist Church.

You can't open a prohibition era bar without having a liquor license.

What are the current minimum requirements to get a liquor license downtown?  Does it have to be a certain distance from a church?

^It says within 1500 feet needs a waiver. That's probably something that needs to change; if it's 750 feet and 4 blocks from First Baptist, 1500 feet would be 8 blocks away! I tend to doubt any of those churches care whether a bar opens up several blocks from their property.

Thanks.  I agree that it should be changed.  With the footprint that FBC along with other churches have downtown a lot of potential bar space is eliminated.  Not sure I agree with the assumption that churches downtown care whether a bar opens several blocks away though.

Hmmm, a 1500 foot radius from a church would take out most of the Northbank.

Well, there's no indication that any of the three ostensibly affected churches care about this particular one, and the owners had to jump through the hoop anyway. And of course even if some of them did care, fine, but a 1500 square foot radius is excessive in a downtown environment.

1500 feet is excessive. Upon further review, the only chunk of the Northbank that is located more than 1500 from a church is the area generally bounded by Clay, Bay, Hogan and the riverfront. Everything else south of State & Union, from I-95 in LaVilla to Hogans Creek in the Cathedral District, falls within 1500 feet of a church.
