There are some pretty sad options here. A couple basically say they want to get rid of the District or that the function should be only that of promoting business rather than protecting our resources. And because these guys are talking about the cost of the district and using less money, I fear that some will get elected. Its pathetic.

What purpose does the district serve?

What purpose does the district serve?

From the FL Statutes:
"conducting surveys, investigations, research and demonstrational projects relating to soil and water conservation (in areas like irrigation, water quality, and soil erosion)."

So, making sure our water supply is not poisoned, for one.

But do they actually do anything?  I know what the statute says but I have never heard research being funded by the district.  The soil and water conservation district is completely unnecessary anymore.

I am also unclear what these people actually do.  I went to a young dems meeting and it seemed like some very unqualified people were using this as their first step towards being career politicians, but that is my only experience with it.  What sort of background or knowledge base should one have for this position?

I think that's pretty much exactly what it is.  Kind of like the Anastasia Mosquito Control District in St. Johns County.  There's really no need for elections for these.  There are other organziations that can handle soil and water issues that actually have qualified employees (i.e. SJRWMD, DEP, etc.)

+1.
Do you believe that when the blue jay or another bird sings and the body is trembling, that is a signal that people are coming or something important is about to happen?

Remember, Clay Yarborough got his start on the Soil Board.
