Seems like they have a good amount of things going on during this Art Walk.  Talk about bad timing.

Quote• Wednesday’s Art Walk will celebrate African American History Month. The London Bridge Pub, Legit Recording Studios and Poppy Love Smoke are throwing a block party at Ocean and Adams streets. Also, Gold’s Gym on Forsyth Street will be “filling the tub” for the Clara White Mission. Art Walkers who donate toiletry items will receive a free ticket to the Jacksonville Home & Patio Show. Hemming Plaza will be filled with art as well as antique and classic cars from the International Car and Truck Show and the Mopar Club. Art Walk is held the first Wednesday of each month from 5-9 p.m. rain or shine.

If you think thats infuriating, go on YouTube and watch the local news segment from the mid 70s about traffic congestion on Roosevelt, The Mathews, etc..  They were discussing fixes back then, and NONE of it has been implimented.

Yet another task force, yet another vision.....

..... should I bring color copies of my own vision so they can get all gaga over the pretty pictures and join me in a pat-on-the-back session?  That will give them something to file on top of the Downtown Master Plan to hide it from view.

Alright, enough synicism Jason.  I guess this could be a great opportunity to further express our opinions and ideas... maybe this time they'll be listened to.

Jacksonville not dense enough?

Here we go again with the coming of excuses of why Jax can't be something it can and was before.  Imo, if any rail advocates can spare the time, this is just as important as any meeting to try and attend.

Brad Thoburn's response to a Metro Jacksonville member, regarding the meeting's time overlap with Art Walk.

QuoteThanks.  Obviously, we tried to coordinate a myriad of schedules and
conflicts.  Additionally we have people travelling from out of town for
this.  At this point it is really too late to change course.  The visioning
process will take several months and we will continue to get input on it.
Additionally, the vision plan is for the entire Planning District which
includes much more than downtown.  While we will incorporate the downtown
efforts we really are trying to tie them to a vision of the entire planning
district and not rewrite the downtown plan.

I hope you all will stay tuned into the process as we are doing it for
Arlington and the Southeast.  I think a large part of our discussion will
focus on creating land use patterns that better support transit.  Your group
has raised the question about BRT versus light rail.  Unfortunately, the key
to all of this is that we do not have sufficient densities and mixed use
development to effectively support either option.  Hopefully the vision
process will better focus our discussion to land use patterns supporting
transit.

By the way, we've been pushing for the creation of a commuter rail system using existing rail lines and the S-Line corridor, NOT light rail.  For those who don't understand the difference.

Light Rail

Light rail is electrified and can't run on existing lines with freight rail cars.  To construct light rail, new right-of-way would have to be purchased or new rail would have to be installed in existing streets and electrified.

Commuter Rail

Can travel on existing rail without immediately electrifying the lines.  This means passenger trains can run on lines like the "CSX A" or "FEC" without having to build new infrastructure right off the bat.  Thus, in the transportation world, its pretty inexpensive when compared to building new roads, dedicated busways or light rail.

Steven....what made you think this was a DVI meeting...especially since its at the same time as ArtWalk

Could it be your hatred of anything related to them?

No this was not a DVI meeting, this was set up by the planning department.  My problem with the whole way it went down was that they could have picked any other weeknight in the month of February, and it would have been better.

The think with DVI is that they should have been screaming at the top of the heavens about this.  The email shouldn't come from a MetroJacksonville member questioning this, it should come from someone who actually gets paid for this.

Lol.

No, i really don't hate them at all, anyways.

I was sent the link from the DVI site, actually, an easy enough conclusion to make....visions and what have you.

My point in the post was to find out if anyone had heard about the meeting......why would you ask?

I had head several weeks ago the meeting would be this week...I found out the actual date last Friday....fyi, the meeting is about the City's Future Land Use plan update and may not what you would typically think of as a "visioning" meeting

Call it what ever you want - it was incredibly bad timing.

Without a doubt.  Just what does DVI do that a few organized merchants and increased JSO patrols couldn't? There is not much bang for our buck with DVI.
