It was AWESOME!  There were tons of people lining Main Street.  You had to say "excuse me" to get people to move out of the way.  On Main Street!

Congrats Main Street Cruise directors...you have accomplished what no one else has been able to do in a long long time...fill Main Street with people and traffic!

It was genius.

And you brought back people who once lived and played on Main Street who shared their stories with us.

Most of the night, folks just wandered around in utter amazement and joy.

According to the organizers Heather Sherrod, John Wells and Ed Mitchell (Lowcountry Classics) -- this event will be a monthly one happening on the 4th Saturday.  Follow it on Facebook "Historic Springfield Main Street Cruise".

Best comment I heard was from someone who hadn't been to Springfield in awhile.  They said, "Wow.  Springfield has really turned the corner!"  Woo hoo!

Best Springfield Event Ever!

Thank you John Wells for your incredible vision.  This event had something for everyone, from every generation (see below).

Thank you 77d's for your great performance and willingness to work within our limited budget - we will make it up to you at a future event!

Springfield, we need to grab this momentum and MAKE IT HAPPEN on Main Street!!

Looks like a great turnout.  Unfortunately, I had to miss it due to a previous engagement in......Fleming Island (forgive me!).  I'll definitely be at the next one.

And, btw, the Midsummer's Eve Spirit Gathering (aka hippie fest 2012) was going on at the same time just a block away at the Karpeles Museum.

Pretty sweet stuff. Lots of photos -

There were far more people at the Main Street Cruise than the Go Skate Day event in Hemming Plaza. Where's the front page story?  :'(

Much like Go Skate Day, when they marketed towards a niche (ie, skaters/classic car lovers) and just say "show up", they did. In mass.

The best part? The entire thing cost the commuity $300.

That's bang for your buck.

I hope the momentum for this can stay strong for a long time.  Its a great way to get continual positive exposure for Springfield!  It would also be wonderful is a new generation of teenagers took to "cruising" Main Street much like their grandparents did back in the day :)

It's not a contest. I personally couldn't make it, this past Saturday and no one has forwarded me anything. Send some pics and I'll be more than happy to get something up.
