Change Duval County to Jacksonville County? Why not, Jacksonville and Duval are

practically one and the same, why do we still cling to the relic of the past known as Duval County, it doesn't exist, Jacksonville is both a city and a county, it is the successor to Duval County, and it's time the "bold new city" took some bold steps towards becoming a more coherent and unified city. I love this city, and really believe it could be great someday if only it would live up to it's self proclaimed boldness.

To those who worry about what the beaches might think, let them secede if they don't like it, that tiny piece of real-estate is of little consequence to one of the geographically largest cities on earth, let them create their own little county, or merge with St Johns, it really doesn't matter. Besides, Jax Beach will probably not be as opposed to it as Neptune and Atlantic might be, for obvious reasons, and Baldwin, they don't even have a leg to stand on, they should have consolidated with Jax a long time ago, here we have a microscopic little city surrounded in 360 directions by a massive city like Jacksonville, who do they think they are, the Vatican?!

In order to become a bold new city one has to take bold new steps, consolidation was an excellent idea, it put Jacksonville on the map, now, we need to take further steps towards making this one of Americas greatest cities.

Not a bad idea. All it would be is a name change. Countries in Africa do that all the time. Plus, a few years ago Dade County became Miami-Dade County. (Which made no sense considering Miami is only a small part of Dade)

The beach communities once tried to secede and become Ocean County. Looks like they already want out. Let them go - especially nasty Jax Beach :P

As for Baldwin, that little hick town got rid of its police department awhile back and is now served by the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office. Kind of ironic for a place that didnt want to be part of The Bold New City of The South ;)

Recent redistricting will make it easier for the beaches to seek their Independence from Jacksonville in the future. Ultimately, isn't that what they want?

What benefit would this have? None that I see.  Plus there is the history  of the name.  It would cause havoc, to what avail.  There would be costs involved in renaming buildings and such.

And your crazy to think the beaches are marginal in there impact on the tax base.  Foot for foot, they provide a ton of money, relatively speaking.

that happened because much of City of Miami government was taken over by Dade County....they now elect a county-wide Mayor, who has more power in Miami itself than the city's mayor.

I'm with SMoody....  DUUUUVALLLLL!!!!!

The tradition and history is more important.

How about GOOO JAGS!!!

And, if it's history you want to preserve, let's just deconsolidate and go back to being called Cowford, because change is always a bad thing, we don't want to look forward because it might mean we have to stop looking backward.

Seriously though, Jacksonville wouldn't be the only county with the same name as it's chief city, take Los Angeles county for example, or San Diego. Jacksonville is in a unique position where it extends to almost every square mile of it's particular county, and its city government administers for the entire county, there is no Duval County government outside of the consolidated city of Jacksonville.

They'd have to close the new courthouse for another six months to change the name.

Estimated cost to change the sign out front: $60 million.

so what would be the point of this again? And why would we ever cut the beaches out of Duval?

We wouldn't cut the beaches out, they would attempt to cut themselves out due to stubbornness.

We should do this as a matter of city pride, we should do what we can to unite this city into a single cohesive unite. Duval County represented the old establishment, where the city and county were divided, where all of the various neighborhoods were left to fend for themselves as independent townships, where corruption was rampant.

Jacksonville represents the new, where  the city and county are one, where we are united into the single largest city in the contingous 48 states, where corruption has less places in which to hide.

Duval Co and Jax are not entirely synonymous. There are parts of the county that are not part of the City of Jacksonville.

I'm don't really care either way, but I don't see the point. Plus it seems like an unnecessary expense.

Debbie Thompson

Except for the Beaches, the city and county have been one since 1968, as well as the largest city in the lower 48.  If corruption hiding somewhere is a problem, changing the name of the county isn't going to fix that.  And conversely, if the problem exists, fixing it doesn't require a name change.

I agree, I was referring to  consolidation being a factor in reduced corruption.

Debbie Thompson

Oh, OK. I get it now.  Although I still don't see the need for a name change.  :-)

Somewhere else on the forum we talked about the detrimental effect consolidation had on the urban core, with so many tax dollars now going more to the "suburbs" (and there's another thread started about calling the suburbs the suburbs.)
