Trees in the Roosevelt Median

Longtime lurker...just registered to ask this question.

I just noticed that either the City or FDOT has begun to remove the oak trees in the median of Roosevelt Blvd (US17) between Long Bow and Verona.  It looks like they've removed about 1/3 of the trees (with possibly more to be removed today?).

Just wondering if anyone knows what's going on?

Yes, they are replacing the trees. The old Ash Oaks were diseased and not doing too well. They are planting crepe myrtles.

A light rail or street car would make more sense...  8)
In a boat at sea one of the men began to bore a hole in the bottom of the boat. On being remonstrating with, he answered, "I am only boring under my own seat." "Yes," said his companions, "but when the sea rushes in we shall all be drowned with you."

An indigenous tree would make sense as well...... :-[

Yeah,  how about those trees that make the historic nieighborhoods so beautiful?  Live Oaks.  In 50 years the whole road would have an awesome tree canopy.

Screw that, JEA will just come along and prune the hell out of them. At least with the CM's, they don't get high enough into the lines that they look like un-natural from pruning.

They will not plant Live Oaks in the median, there isnt enough room for them to grow out and mature. Mtrain is right JEA would just butcher them to death if they got within 10ft of a powerline.

Also, a CM is much more forgiving if someone happens to cross over the median, where as a Live Oak will result in sure death. I saw such on Memorial Day weekend near the FCCJ campus, when a woman with 4 kids lost control of her buick and plowed over about 4 of the CMs in the median. Had it been Live Oaks, we would have been reading about her and the kids in the TU.

Hopefully, they won't have to, or won't choose to, commit crepe murder...

I like it... Imagine! 9' long oaks in the median, laid horizontally, topped by two ribbons of steel, why you can almost smell the creosote and the ozone can't you. Let's do all of this Hawaiian style, Ua mau ke ea o ka 'aina i ka pono!

Many times people are bored with Crepe Myrtles, but truth is they simply work for our area.  They flower, low maintenance, hardy, noninvasive, and like someone wrote earlier they are forgiving in a crash.  Also in storms they do much less damage should they break or become uprooted. My personal favorite is the single trunk Natchez.
