good lord, the detectives on the scene don't think it was a 'drive by' because the lane is a dead end.

The cartridges and bullets are apparently from multiple weapons, so we guessed that one correctly.

Sometimes I wonder whether or not its an obstacle to be so literal minded that you think a 'drive by' can only happen if you have to drive straight in order to escape.

Perhaps... but you'd have to be pretty stupid to do a drive by on a dead-end street. Usually the people getting shot at are armed (or thought to be) and you don't want to have to drive back by them to get away. I'll give the JSO a bit of credit - I assume they know a thing or two about what they're doing, as they have lots of experience in the area :)

Edit: good call on the racist thing, though. What's up with the TU website? I notice that every time I read a story on there. If you didn't know better, you'd think Jax was full of nothing but racist pricks.

perhaps you have a point.

But it is pretty odd to have multiple guns shooting at multiple people in a car that doesn't stop driving, isn't it?

Yeah, that's a good point. I guess I should extend the same courtesy to the potential drive-by shooters that I extend to the JSO - they're the ones with all the experience when it comes to drive-by shootings. Or they could be idiots. Or both!

hmm.
So they accidentally hit everyone below the waistline?
Its possible.  But then again, a lot more people have military training than 10 years ago.

Wonder how many people were shooting?

Im going to guess that there were three people in the car.  Two shooting and one driving.  Cant get an intelligent word on the subject from the "witness" anymore.  He's on a bit of a trip.

To me it doesn't make sense to do a drive by and 'aim' for the legs.  Stephen, I think it's a safe assumption that you aren't well versed in firearms.  Pistols are pretty tricky to become an expert in, which you'd have to be to intentionally hit people in the legs from a moving vehicle.  I've seen all the documentaries about military members in our gangs, but this is not typical of those types of people.

I don't know the law, so maybe Chris can weigh in on this, but if this attack was just meant to wound, these guys chose very poorly in how to do it.  The use of a vehicle and firearms increases the severity of the crime immensely beyond what it would have been if they just beat them up.  I believe their intent was to kill.

Also, the shell casings should indicate whether or not the shooters were in a car and literally "driving by".  The shells would be strewn along the street in a linear fashion with the shells of all guns mixed in with one another.  If the shooters were stationary, there would be a large concentration of shells in an isolated area and the shells from each gun would remain largely separate.  For the shell casings of multiple guns (I'm assuming more than 2) either two people on the passenger side were each holding two pistols each (which would make aiming even harder), or a third or fourth person would be shooting across the other person (which would mean they were almost shooting blind, and this would be extremely moronic).  Either way results in a bunch of poorly aimed shots.  The dispersion of shell casings will go a long way to determine the orientation of the shooters and whether or not they were moving.

Either way, the shooters left behind plenty of witnesses to describe what actually happened.

Has JSO respOnded with increased police presence?
3 incidents in past few weeks all within blocks of each other.

Not to my, admittedly limited, knowledge.

We notified them of several upticks in violence and crime in this part of Springfield back in the January SHADCO meeting.  The did a drug sting operation down by Confederate Park, but that was all I heard of or saw.
So I said to him: Arthur, Artie come on, why does the salesman have to die? Change the title; The life of a salesman. That's what people want to see.

I am curious as to where the MADS DADS are from exactly.  Just hearing about them.  Sounds interesting (and I mean that seriously, not sarcastically.)  Good for them for taking to the streets.

At least one person was shot in the leg, and the cops are in helicopters swooping around.

no one is telling.  but apparently the shooters went for everybody's legs.

That's unsporting.

Sanford Florida event may have overshadowed recent Chicago headlines: Over twenty shot.   Six year old killed.

Revolver certainly the 'green' choice,no shell casing litter for those not prone to pick up their empties.

Further flinch- for so many,"Springfield" headlines = "Downtown"

Well, there's still that little piece of spun copper to account for.  If it's not in someone's appendages or flesh, then it's still not the 'green' choice.

Some pistol shooting tendencies.........
1. Aim gets better if you have your eyes open.
2. Hopped up in adrenalin the tendency to jerk or anticipate recoil makes the shots go down.
3. Hits to concrete or any other surface  ricochet  causing leg wounds. Often from the bullet or the copper jacket.
4. Gangster style poor finger control usually causes a combination push and anticipated recoil that makes a shot go low.
5. Shooting from a car is harder than it looks in the movies. That is why it is usually “spray and pray”, no aiming.
6. Holly Wood gets the shots where they are in the script  ‘cause they don’t shoot real bullets. A squib at the point of hit makes the splat.
7. Criminals are not necessarily smart or calculating.

This particular area of Springfield has always been rough. 1st street to florida ave, and the surronding blocks have been a trouble spot for as long as I can remember

Someone told me that below the waist is not considered attempted murder, whereas above the waist is.  Any truth to that?

Yea a lot of that area south of 1st and east of Liberty is pretty rough. Believe there was a shooting on Phelps near Fuller Lane a few years back too. Its not Historic Springfield, but its close enough that the media calls it Springfield.

Well... with a severed femoral artery... you get to watch yourself bleed to death...
In a boat at sea one of the men began to bore a hole in the bottom of the boat. On being remonstrating with, he answered, "I am only boring under my own seat." "Yes," said his companions, "but when the sea rushes in we shall all be drowned with you."

Hey, never said it made logical sense.  And it might only be an urban myth, but if the perpetrators believe it then that might explain the nature of the injuries.

My source insists it must be true, he heard it on a well-known daytime talk show. 8)
