A new GM won't be able to do anything now, and as DD says, all the potential replacements are currently working now anyway. Smith's bags are definitely packed, but firing him now seems tacky and not Khan's style. The only reason Weaver fired Del Rio mid-stream was due to the ownership change. It certainly didn't change the direction of the team much, nor allow us to find a replacement any earlier than the end of the season.

Tacky?  1 - 8 is pretty tacky too.  In my post I DID say...

QuoteI do know one thing... it IS Khans problem now... and we will soon see what type of owner he is.

I also disagree that "A new GM won't be able to do anything now".  I listed only a few things a new GM can and would do right now.  I do agree that a new GM could not really affect the outcome of this season... but that outcome is extremely unlikely to change this season anyway.

In a boat at sea one of the men began to bore a hole in the bottom of the boat. On being remonstrating with, he answered, "I am only boring under my own seat." "Yes," said his companions, "but when the sea rushes in we shall all be drowned with you."

If you hire someone now, you'll be leaving out a lot of qualified people from your search.

Possibly... unless you hire a GM currently not in football...

I don't know who you would bring in right now as a new GM.  Everyone on another NFL team is prohibited from interviewing.  If you skipped the interview and just hired someone, you would face tampering charges.

The only thing that can happen now is to fire Gene and ease everyone's concerns about it not happening.  You'd have to promote from within though, and that is a dead man's walking job right there.

EDIT:  Just saw your post about hiring someone not in football right now.  Which is a possibility, but I think not a good one.  Times are changing faster than ever in football.  We need someone who can come in and work with Son of Khan on the new NFL and strategies.
So I said to him: Arthur, Artie come on, why does the salesman have to die? Change the title; The life of a salesman. That's what people want to see.

Not sure promoting from within will happen... the organization seems broke and dysfunctional.  IMHO... new blood is needed.

On a different note... tell us about your Lambeau trip.  I was there for the New Orleans game...

I get it... it's all Gene's fault.

Usually I don't agree with Alfie, but when you take the emotion of being there out of it and actually study the film, these are the things that you would see.  And believe me, he's on board with the firing of GS as well.

But when you go 3 and out and only get to run 12-13 plays in a half, it always going to seem worse than it really is.

What it really is is a lack of making simple plays.

I contend the reason is lack of talent.  Mularky has already said it IS NOT lack of effort.  There is also lack of execution... lack of accountability...

I have not been in the fire Gene Smith camp... until now.  The good faith efforts of Smith, the players, the scouts, and staff are not enough to succeed in the NFL.

Play calling is a huge issue also. Everytime the go the conservitive route, the offense cant produce. But when we open up the playbook, we are making big plays down the field. Brakowski is not doing  a very good job.

I disagree.  I think the talent potential is there, it's just not 'there' yet.  A perfect example is Shorts.  Everyone was ready to run him out on a rail last year - another blown mid-round pick from a small school....   This year, he has not only flashed, he's actually been quite good.  3 drops & 1 fumble on 43 attempts and 4th in the league for yds/rec.

This year, everyone is up in arms about the JB pick...  Seriously, I would like him to be another Julio Jones but first I still don't think the Falcons will ever break even with that pick - they gave up too much, plus they already had a Matt Ryan....

We have talent, it's just young talent potential - Brewster and Bradfield would be backups on most any other team, but we've had to play them due to injuries - and in the long run that will make them better players - this year...  it sucks.

Gabbert has made strides all season, he can make the throws, but he still has happy feet.  Let's face it, he was a 2 year project at best when we drafted him, even though he was a top 10 pick, but it hasn't played out that way and he's still behind other true rookies (Luck, Tannehill) that have more experience in an NFL style system. Those guys started all 4 years at their respective schools.

I've just never been one for blowing up and starting over.  I think he's made some really solid picks (Monroe, Cox, Jennings, Gabbert, Potroast, Poz, Lowery, Anger (yeah, I had to), JB, among others)  I also think he's made some pretty poor decisions, but I can't blame him for injuries - Underwood, Session, Kampman, the punting debacle from last year, etc...

IMO, I think Gene should get the 3 year extension and it will be based on how well Gabbert and Mularkey can work together, Jesus Christ, do I have to mention that everyone's golden child, Alex Smith, is now in his 7th/8th year and this has only had the same OC for 2 consecutive seasons now - also, he was almost pulled when SF made a play for Manning

Unbelievably amazing.  To say that Lambeau is football heaven is an understatement.  First I want to say that Green Bay fans, and all Wisconsinites we met, are some of the nicest and most caring people I have ever met.  They went above and beyond the call of duty.  They were so nice it was almost unsettling.  We were parked 10 feet from Lambeau.  You could touch it from our spot.  We bought all tailgating supplies, set up tables, grills, drinks and food.  Tons of Green Bay fans kept stopping by and taking pictures with us.  They kept bringing us drinks (did you know that Wisconsin is the Brandy drinking capital of the world?  Well IT IS!).  If I had told one of them that I was cold, they wouldn't have hesitated to give me the sweater off their back.  In fact, the guys next to us go ice fishing every year, they gave us their info and said to come back, ice fishing trip is on them.

They also don't put up with hecklers.  And if anything screamed "heckle me" it was our teal pants and leather Jaguar Jackets.  But they told us before the game that we had nothing to fear.  And they were right.  Not once was anyone rude or anything other than pleasant.  Ok, maybe once, but that was at the end of the game.  This guy came to our seats and was talking to us, I guess you could call it heckling, but it was innocent at best.  People around us stood up and told him to go sit back down, and he did, in a calm and professional manner.

Now the fans generosity and friendliness is only superseded glory that is Lambeau.  A lot of places have a hard time linking their history to the present.  Not Lambeau, you feel it right away.  From the bench seats to the historic brick.  Its built very close, so you feel apart of the action.  We were 6 rows up , jag side, about 20 yard line.  Everbank is built flowering out, so you don't get a real closeness feel, but Lambeau is built up.

The entire trip was everything I could imagine and more.  If you have even the slightest bit of interest in going to Lambeau, do it.  You won't regret it.

Well... we said the same about ol' Dirk Koetter(sp?) last year... seems to be doing pretty well calling plays in Atlanta.

My experience also... I have been at many NFL stadiums, tailgates, pre/postgame experiences and Lambeau stands out... Head and Shoulders... above them all.

Atlanta has talent on their team and was already good before he got there. IMO, They are making koetter look good. The play calling is a problem. When you keep running the same plays for entire game  (which were not working might I add.) until the 4th Q, you indeed have an issue. When they change the plays, they were lighting the field up. We need to make plays down field. Honestly, were better at that now than running the ball.

You cannot be serious.  Let's take a look at your "solid picks."

  • Monroe: He's a good pick in the second round.  He's an overwhelmingly average pick as a top ten draft pick.
  • Cox: He's made of glass and cannot stay on the field.  He's slightly above average when he can play.  He just gave up 129 yards receiving to an injured Calvin Johnson, 85 yards to Darius Heyward-Bey and 144 to Brandon Marshall.  A good CB does not do that.  We gave up a second and a third round pick for him.  There is nothing solid about that.
  • Jennings: Nice pick in the late rounds but RBs are a dime a dozen and its not unusual to hit on RBs late in the draft.
  • Gabbert: Anything but solid.  One 300-yard game in 21.  Contrast that to Luck who has four in eight games.  He's a top ten pick.  In a league where the QB rules, if you do not have a superstar QB, you are going to struggle to make the playoffs.  Gabbert may not be horrible, but he is not going to be a superstar.
  • Potroast: He has been completely underwhelming this year.
  • Anger:  Whatever.  Its a horrible pick for a team that won 5 games the season before.
