was the defensive coaching staff ok a few years back when we were ranked near the bottom?  if so, what changed?

oh yeah...we got good players!

^^^ This + 2000, Del Rio has nothing to do with it, look at who's making all the defensive plays, primarily the new acquisitions.

Well Now Rucker is on IR and we have to activate a tight end off the practice squad! WTF is going on! Man our whole offensive line is banged up! Everyone keep saying its the same team as last year, but most of our starters of last year on IR, and we keep having to rotate people around, etc etc. I solely blame thses injuries on the lock out . Not only the Jags, but injuries are through the roof across the leuage. Having these guys get out here with no offseason and no condition and training camp was a BAD idea. We havnet had a consistent O-line all season from people being shifted in and out from injuries.

OK, boys and girls, I've got a question for you.  I've been reading a lot of angry comments on other forums and websites around the league pertaining to our WR issue.  Why didn't we get _________________?  _______________ is available, why didn't we look at him?

I'm wondering which WR that's been available this year would be a better fit than what we have now?  Would he help us long-term or is it a 1 year fix?

I'll post my thoughts on this later this afternoon.

Many of us assume Del Rio is gone at the end of the year.  Who to replace him?  What do you think about Andy Reid who may be drummed out of Philly at the end of this season?
In a boat at sea one of the men began to bore a hole in the bottom of the boat. On being remonstrating with, he answered, "I am only boring under my own seat." "Yes," said his companions, "but when the sea rushes in we shall all be drowned with you."

I think it's too early to tell, regarding the coaching job.

WW had success with Coughlan, a hard-nosed, winning college coach out of BC - and will admit that he had too much input on personnel, which was his downfall here.  Not being able to manage the salary cap.

IMO, I think we'll look to go back to that style.  Maybe not as hard of a coach, but someone who shares the same values as Gene (who I do think will get his contract along with most of his staff - 3 years), who will have some input on the coaching decision as well.  Expect someone from a major conference, but not a major program.  Think of a guy with some pro-experience as a postion coach, that moved on to a head coaching job in college and has established a winning program over the past 5-7 years.  Bo Pelini comes to mind.

Or maybe someone completely random (my personal favorite) Mike Leach.  He was a good coach, had a good program, just had a bad coaching moment that cost him his job.  He's been out of it for a few years, and maybe this kind of jump would benefit him greatly.

I really don't think that we're going to make a splash in the NFL's coaching FA.  There are some big names floating around, Cower, Gruden, Fisher, Billick; and some other names that may be around after the season - Reid, Sparano, Spagnoulo, Belicheck (yeah, I said it) - but IMO, these aren't the types of hires that we're going to make.

The thing that will be most important is that the coach and Gene Smith have to share the same philosophy of football.  There has to be a chemistry to it.  It's also good to point out the youthfulness of our team.  They need to be coached by someone who is used to working with college age kids opposed to seasoned vets.  If this were a veteran team, I'd lean towards and established NFL coach.  This isn't.

I will admit that our O-line are babies. Thats not an excuse, but a reality. The Majority of them have only in the league 2 years. 3 at the most and this is thier first time starting. The only veteran on the O-line is Brad Mester. Behind him Mojo and Mercedes have been around for about 5 or six years. We do need a coach who knows how to coach a young team. I totally agree with that. I am glad the TRUE fan base is being very patient this year. Those people on blogs and forums 9 out of 10 times have never even been to Jags and probably doesnt even support the team. Same goes for those "fans" they interview on the news. (they really kill me interviewing random people and referring to them as ("fans")

Whoever it is I hope they give it a lot of thought and grab someone who can get this team back to its winning ways. We've had a long winter of mediocrity under Del Rio and it's several years past time a change was made.

Gene deserves more time.

Were it my team, I'd look for a coach that's willing to be the face of the team, in the same manner that Spurrier and Bowden were the faces of UF and FSU.  I think that college-like dynamic would work well here, so long as Weaver's team approach is to be tightly wound to the city the way it is now.  The next guy needs a strong personality--not necessarily Rex Ryan-ish or Mike Singletary-ish, but not someone who defaults to CoachSpeak when asked a question.  I know why Jack does it, but it causes me to tune him out when he talks.  Coughlin was The Man around here, which is why he was included on that mural from back in the day.  He was as much the face of the team as Boselli, Brunell, and Smith from those days.  If there's someone among the coordinator ranks that fits that bill, great.  But if we're ever to be the kind of place that shuts down on Sunday like they do up in Green Bay, then we need a coach that doesn't mind stepping into the limelight.

As for the Big-name, retread coaches...I'll pass.  There are as many failures as there are successes with that approach.  Maybe more.

Thanks Jags. Not a huge win, but another win on the books. I can rest well tonight.

Anytime we beat the Colts, even if they suck as bad as they do this season, I get happy.

Im glad to see we put Chastin West out there. He was a diamond in the ruff on the packers practice. Him and Gabbert seem to have a connection. And Dillard is finally have a chance to prove him self. Gabbert did great in the second half. Made very good decisions and very good and accurate throws. Im not giving up on my team!

Any win over Indy is a good one.

Defense has moved up to #4. If the colts offense keeps playing like they are, we will move up to #31 in two weeks. LOLOL

Another great game by the defense.  And I actually noticed a bit of improvement from Gabbert.  Despite his early interception, he made some great passes and was slightly better in the pocket.  His confidence is increasing.

As usual, Kudos to MJD for keeping up the consistency and bringing us the win.  I do feel bad for Scobee.  Damned announcer's curse!!!!!  Sometimes I wish they'd do nothing more the cheer during a big play and give updates on the other games around the league.  More like an audible scoreboard instead of running thier freaking mouths the whole game.

I could get behind a team that builds on its strengths while gradually overcoming its weaknesses.  It may take a while, but I may become a Jags fan after all.
