Recently, a couple of HPC positions apparently became open. The city will have to fill them within 40 days. I learned that Joe Markusic applied for one of the open position. He is close to Preservation SOS and I hope as a community, we can rally to support him to make sure Springfield is well represented.

Appointments to the HPC are made by the Mayor and confirmed by the city council. At least 3 members need to fulfill specific qualifications, but for any appointment, professional qualifications have to be considered and I think Joe fits the bill.

Personally, i sent an e-mail to the mayor and councilman Gaffney. I hope others will join to express support.

Here is the relevant passage of the city code:

Quote
Sec. 76.102. - Membership.

(a)

The Commission shall consist of seven members appointed for two years and three shall be appointed for staggered terms of three years or until their successors are appointed and qualified. No Commission member shall serve more than two consecutive terms. Each member of the Commission shall be a resident of the City of Jacksonville during his entire term. A member of the Commission may be removed during his term by the Mayor, with the approval of the City Council.

(b)

To meet the requirements of the Certified Local Government Program, as provided in the National Historic Preservation Act, as amended in 1980 (Pub. Law 96-515), and to carry out its responsibilities under this chapter, the membership of the Commission shall include, to the extent available, three persons who are educated or practice in one of the disciplines of architecture, history, architectural history, planning, archaeology or related disciplines. Whenever an individual is nominated to the Commission, the Mayor and the City Council shall consider the professional qualifications of the individual to ensure that the requirements of the Certified Local Government Program are met. Members of the Commission shall be appointed by the Mayor, subject to confirmation by the City Council. When a vacancy occurs on the Commission, it shall be filled within sixty days.

Joe knows these old houses inside and out and loves every inch of them.  He would be a great commissioner.

I agree, that Joe is a great nominee for this position, as he certainly knows inside and out, what these old houses need and what's needed to maintain them....I'm all for his nomination!

If Joe throws his name in, we should all write letters of support.

Who were the three board members to step down?

I know Lisa Simon was one. And she won't be missed.

Not sure who the other members were who stepped down.
