Are they taking down the garage too? Maybe I'm confused as to what was considered the garage but from the looks of it, the whole thing is being taken down.

The garage is staying.  You can see it pretty well in this image:

Ah, I thought it went over further than that and that part of it had already been taken down.

I have to hand it to the demolition company...they are getting it down pretty rapidly. Went by there Friday and was stunned.  I also thought they had elected to demolish it.  Too bad , as with many buildings it went into ruin.  But it will be refreshing to see anything new replace it and have life.

The plan was never to demolish the entire building.  The project has always involved taking out the hotel rooms and keeping the garage, which will be used to provide parking for the new development's retail.  Imo, it's a pretty smart thing to do, considering the cost of building structured parking from scratch.  However, i'm interested to see what they plan to do to make the parking garage look better than what it does today.

Judging from the project's renderings it appears the plan is also to make the garage larger than what it is today.

The only thing is...via the daily records, the owners stated after the Demo, we will not see any action on the site for almost a year. with hopes to have everything complete about 2 years after that.....

Well... Demoing the hotel part is a good start and if the garage has to wait a while before the development , maybe a coat of paint would make it cosmetically appealing until the new development begins. Either way , the blighted hotel needed to go.

Definately! Just tearing down the towers has made the site easy on the eyes.

According to Mr. Van Winkle, if I remember correctly from the community meeting, the facade is also being removed from the garage during demo.  That alone should make it look better.

I hope a new garage facade will be added as a part of this phase 1.  If not, what will be left won't look good.

We rode by the old Claude Nolan building through Confederate Park yesterday, there was water gushing down the NE corner of the annex built onto the back.  There is a major leak coming out of that thing from somewhere up high, and no it wasn't rain water or anything like that.  That building is in rough shape.

Its a shame.. I hope the CNC Building is spared and rehabbed for some future use .

Just like the library, nothing will happen until some major, credit tenants are signed up.  I hope it's soon though!!
