I chose "the spike" very memorable name with a historic tie in.

Does anyone remember the TV show "The District", starring Craig T. Nelson?

Nelson could be hired to develop some TV spots to promote Jacksonville's THE DISTRICT with Sheriff Rutherford (TIC) doing the follow up. If the public perception could be routed to believe that our DISTRICT is the safest venue in any metropolitan area with the most to offer?

Luv Craig T! He's a racer too. He did a promo spot concerning a race or car related event recently and for some reason, I think it was actually shot inside the Florida Theatre but I may be mistaken. Would he even consider reviving that District connection?

Seems like the Spike is leading so far, what is the meaning behind it? I do like most of the names that have a spin on the Bay street name.

Jimmy

The Spike is a little non-descriptive.

"You're going to the what?"

You know, the bars on East Bay.

"Ohh, why didn't you say so?"

Yep... I went with the core...
In a boat at sea one of the men began to bore a hole in the bottom of the boat. On being remonstrating with, he answered, "I am only boring under my own seat." "Yes," said his companions, "but when the sea rushes in we shall all be drowned with you."

that picture reminds me of a time when the buildings actually had brands on top of them

"Well we started out at Burrito Gallery, and then went over to Dos Gatos for a while before checking out that band at Burro Bar".

hours later

"Hello?"

"Hey Jimmy, Im on East Bay, and I cant find any of those places you were talking about.  We're trying to go to Dos Gatos.  We've driven up and down Bay Street, and I cant find it anywhere.  Did you mean the Dive Bar?"

"No.  Dos Gatos isnt on East Bay, but its near there"

"I thought you said it was on East Bay?"

"Well it is kindof, but its really more like the east bay street area.'

"Um. OK.  Well I googled the directions to east bay street and weve been driving around for like, an hour"

"Its just a block or so over.  On Forsyth Street."

"Oh!.  Why didnt you say so?"

;)

That's why we need a NAME for that "insert-whatever-your-name-you-like-to-ebay-east-bay-street-core-district-actionville-area"

"When I take over JTA, the PCT'S will become artificial reefs and thus serve a REAL purpose. - OCKLAWAHA"

"Stephen intends on running for office in the next election (2014)." - Stephen Dare

LoL.

I like "ebay-east-bay-street-core-district-actionville-area".

or Downtown.

I also support calling it the (Down)Town Center, just to confuse people...

"I thought you said it was at the Town Center?"

"No the Downtown Center"

"Is that the one where you pay for parking?"

"Bingo!"

IMHO, I was grading a name on: Historical connection, ease of remembering, uniqueness, and some kind of "feel" that speaks to an entertainment district (personally, I like something with an edge).
For me, "The Spike" spoke to all of those criteria.

Given it's a new name for the area, perhaps it could be properly known as the Spike Entertainment District or something like the Spike Bay Street District.  I don't know.  But, hopefully, the place would become popular enough to be known shorthand as "The Spike."  IMHO, ideally you wouldn't need to say entertainment district...as in "The Gaslight Quarter", "Deep Ellum", "The Stockyard".  My friends and I just say Beale Street...more properly, I believe, it is the Beale Street Entertainment District --- and that would be the ideal pattern here (again, IMHO).

To me "the core" speaks to a larger area than the defined limits of Bay to Adams, Liberty to Ocean.

I know we use the term urban core to describe the entire downtown area from La Villa to the shipyards... but I think by simply mentioning "the core" most people could visualize the more central "entertainment district.

I don't really like any of the choices.  My two cents.
