Group hungers for funds to bring East Jacksonville grocery plan to life

An early site plan envisions Save-A-Lot using an 18,000-square-foot store, and the entire center â€" a pharmacy, dollar store, beauty shop, and others â€" taking up about 41,000 square feet.

It also shows a McDonald's planned on the east side of Phoenix.

The potential shopping center site used to house a wood-reserving business, American Celcure, where harmful chemicals repeatedly overflowed into the soil before the business closed in the 1980s. On top of that, someone anonymously dumped more contaminated debris there after the business shut down, Pinnix said.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency spent about $315,000 on cleanup work and monitoring at the site, Pinnix said, and Florida's Department of Environmental Protection pledged a similar amount.
