Martin Kennelly, historic code enforcement, someone (not Martin Kennelly, not historic code enforcement, many apologies) has cited a Preservation SOS project for graffiti.

Well, this ought to really help get homeowners on board...

Have the owner show up at the hearing and state it is artwork that doesn't violate the cited ordinance, that the owner had installed. Graffiti has a definition within the statute, and this isn't it. As usual, nothing has changed at COJ Code Enforcement.

I thought they were on board with this?

I thought they were on board with this?

Well my question is I wonder who called in the complaints?

Hmmm....

(As though there's really any mystery)

Bill Killingsworth was glad to see what we were doing to this house when he visited it.  He said he had "no problem" with the art.

Maybe Martin Kennelly (someone else) didn't get the memo.

But who would want to call in code complaints on such a positive effort as this?

I really wonder what kind of people would do that?

Terrible that some people would be SPARring at their own neighbors like this...

sheclown

Well, we don't know who filed the complaint. Although I'm sure we'll find out.

Bottom line ... does it really matter at the end of the day what is painted on the plywood if the freakin' house is saved?

Seems to me a simple forest-for-the-trees situation.

it's ridiculous, and i really wish i could say that i'm shocked or at least surprised.

from Brenda @ the SPAR office:

QuoteJust wanted to reiterate a previous conversation when I assured you no code enforcement complaints would come from me or the spar office regarding Preservation SOS projects. I did mention that there had been numerous complaints that had come to the office about the window painting, but they were not submitted to any city dept or worker and I had no foreknowledge of code's action to cite property.

I have acted in good faith with SOS and would appreciate your support when or if there is a challenge that "spar" could be responsible for some action. If there's a question, contact me directly so you'll get a direct answer or commitment I'll look into it and get back to you.

Regarding the citation, I'm sure there'll be a way to work this out and we'll help in any way we can.

Jacksonville is one of the most jacked up cities I have ever lived in......

I love Jacksonville, I really do.  But sometimes I just wonder...

There is lots of damage to undo in Springfield.  I personally believe people were lured into the neighborhood and told unsightly properties would be demolished, so "don't worry" and Main Street would have a Starbucks and Banana Republic (okay exaggerating, but you get my point.)  I have no facts to back this statement just so I am clear, just what I believe.

We have a lot of damage control to do, that I am certain about.  There are folks in Springfield, that live here, who bought and restored/rehabbed historic homes that want to see homes around them that are NOT fixed DEMOLISHED.  Folks who don't care about the history just what their block looks like.

My house is on Ionia Street.  I am well aware of the "talk on the streets," particulary Ionia.

WE have to educate folks.

As for the citation?  I just roll my eyes.  For the last 2 months I have sent weekly emails to the head honchos in the city, including Martin Kennelley.  1626 Ionia Street was the topic of one of the emails, and I even sent a photo!!!!!  HPC is well aware of our efforts.  The art on this property is NOT graffiti.  Gheesh.  Been to LA lately?  Looked at the sides of the trains the next block over on Clark?  THAT'S graffiti.

I do know having talked to Martin Kennelley, that if he receives a complaint, he follows up on it, but to actually cite for graffiti?     I chuckle, because this is IONIA STREET.  Everything is game over here, that's why I Love Ionia!!

We will continue to do what we do: save the houses.  Even if that means adding art.

Stop asking for so much.  Gheesh.   ;)
