Wow - I'd just like to thank my co-founders of MetroJacksonville.com, the fans, my supporters, and most of all, Mayor John Peyton, who inspired me to get more involved in local affairs.

Not at all.  JU has about 3,000 students, 2,000 traditional undergrad, and about 1,200 on campus (rough numbers).

JU, offers a good amount of undergrad programs (Avation Management with Flight Operations is probably the largest; the program is in association with Delta Connection Academy).  They also offer an MBA (before everyone else jumped on the bandwagon), an Executive MBA, a Masters in Nursing, a Masters in Teaching, and an orthodontics graduate degree.

Oh OK, so it's slightly bigger than my alma mater, The Citadel. Cool. BTW, you guys have a GREAT mascot!  As far as academics, I think some of the best education actually comes from the smaller universities.

I dont think JU was ever a community college. FCCJ used to be called something else (like fcj or something), but JU was always a four year.

Actually - it was.  JU was founded in 1934 as Jacksonville Junior College (it was actually named William J Porter University for a few months), in a building in Riverside.  Then, in the late 1940's they purchased a plot of land way out in the boonies (Arlington), and the first building was completed in 1950.  They became Jacksonville University in 1956 (I think that year's right).

Hopefully we can update this list of notable graduates in such a way soon.  I finally got a chance to meet Alvin tonight at CityKidz.  Even though it went something like this:

Me: "Hello, Mr. Brown, I am Doug Skiles, it is great to meet you."
Alvin: "Thanks Doug, it is great to meet you also."

I enjoyed hearing him speak live and believe that he would make Jacksonville proud.  Hearing him talk about his role in urban redevelopment with the Clinton Administration and then with the re-building of New Orleans after Katrina, provided some of that spark I was missing this morning.  It comes down to this for me:  I am mostly concerned with the strengthening of our urban core.  While I believe there are some good things that would come from Hogan's housecleaning of the city government, it is more important for me that we focus on moving Jacksonville forward.

I hope to get another chance to talk to him a little more in depth in the near future.

Confession - what I was really looking for when I found this old topic was more information about JU's Marine Science Research Institute (although I do mean what I wrote about Alvin).

When I was at the Waterways Commission meeting yesterday, the two gentlemen representing JU MSRI (Dr. Quentin White and Dr. Gerard Pinto) talked about some very interesting things regarding the dolphins in the river.  As a frequent runner along the northbank, I enjoy seeing them swimming about.  They estimate that 190 live in the river and very possibly all year!  They have developed a new program of photographing the dorsal fins for identification.  Similar to face recognition software, they have software that can recognize the unique features of the dorsal fin.  Apparently, no two are the same.  I don't know why that surprised me, but it did.

Pretty cool stuff.  I hope to visit the MSRI soon and will share some more non-political interesting things about Jacksonville in my quest to lighten things up around here a little bit.

I'm glad he can speak to his own accomplishments, but can anyone else speak to them? any leaders from Washington or people in Katrina who were personally affected by his leadership and actions?
