Are the pictures above of the S-Line Trail? I have been up and down Beaver through Durkeeville looking for any sign of a trailhead without any luck.

I even got pulled over on my bike by a JSO while going up and down Beaver. He thought I was a little too suspicious and thought I was the area to buy drugs. I told him what I was doing and since he had know knowledge of the S-Line he was having hard time believing me.

I showed him the Google map I had printed out with my notes showing the Durkeeville boundaries and he finally started swing my way. He finally scratched his head looked around and said, "a bike trail from here to to 64th?" Sounds like I need to transfer before the bodies start piling up".

Can someone tell where this trail construction is? The city's website has one small paragraph and the Greenways site just lists it as in Jacksonville.

Thanks

It doesnt reach beaver yet. It still under construction. You would have been better off on Kings. You could also have parked near 8th and 95 and caught in the middle. I think as of now it ends at Pearl near 12th street on the north end, but I am not positive.

Here is a map of the entire route. I'm not sure which sections are complete though.

Right now it starts at Kings in Durkeeville, just west of the main post office, and ends at Boulevard, near Shands in Springfield.

Thanks all for the information. I'm sure I will able to find it now.

This is how the S-Line Urban Greenway should have been built.  This is the Dequindre Cut trail in Detroit.  Instead of wasting the entire former rail ROW by building the trail in the center, its on the side.

http://fadeddetroit.blogspot.com/2009/03/dequindre-cut-set-to-officially-open.html

QuoteSome of the details of phase one of the project include:

• The path will stretch one mile in length, running north and south along half of the former rail corridor. The paved path will be 20 feet wide and will include separate lanes for bicycle and foot traffic.

• The other half will be left in natural grasses and reserved for potential future rail transit. The possibility still exists, Sutherland says, that in the future a light rail line could be developed in the cut.

• The pathway will include lighting and security cameras.

• Landscape modification includes selective clearing of underbrush, preservation of specimen trees and selective planting of appropriate native species.

• ADA compliant access ramps will be placed at Lafayette Street and Gratiot Avenue, at the southern end of Eastern Market. The ramps will be able to accommodate maintenance and emergency vehicles.

• Sutherland says because the Cut has already seen organic development by artists, the DDP supports keeping the area as an art park. “It makes sense to keep it going rather than try to develop a similar concept elsewhere,” he says.

Lakelander, shame on you. You don't really expect us to PLAN something do you? Jacksonville Planning is an oxymoron.

I suppose.  Its just frustrating to know that we mentioned this stuff over and over again before the thing even received funding and it ended up being the exact opposite.  Now its everything we said it would be and it will have to be torn up to accommodate rail.  In other words, we just flushed a million dollars down the drain.  Come to think of it, we're repeating the same mistakes with road improvements all throughout the core that ignore potential streetcar and bike lane connections.

Same story, different day with this city.

Nawdry - to calrify a couple things... first that article was not " the most recent JTA newsletter" but from 2007.  Also JTA is not a city agency - but an independent state agency.  COJ does what COJ does - regardless of the wants and wishes of the JTA.  The mayor's attempt to take back $100 million in BRT right-of-way funding from the BJP is a perfect example.

Let me know when you fall down the rabbit hole of money for the project. It is a HUGE waste and not needed now. I'd like the NHL downtown, but it ain't gonna happen, not needed when people cannot feed themselves and JEA keeps kicking people out, homes foreclosing, who need a billion dollar a mile rail system?

Do we live on the same planet??

mtraininjax,

If you can dream it, you can do it.

Your mentality is why Jax is always 20 years behind the leading edge. For the amount od money that will be spent on  the sprawl beltway, you could do probably every rail project that has even been discussed on this website.  Streetcars and rails were widespread in the US, 75 YEARS AGO.  It's not a question of money, it is a question of priorities.
