QuoteJACKSONVILLE, FL -- The Jacksonville Jaguars are set to release one of the most popular and productive players in the team's history, Fred Taylor.

The Jaguars have scheduled a news conference for 1:30 this afternoon to discuss the move.

From what I read on ESPN it sounds like they will try to resign him to a lesser $$$ contract. Hopefully he'll decide he wants to finish his career here even if it means less playing time and less money.

Yeah, I would love for him to be back too. But from his perspective, that would mean there weren't any other teams willing to give him the playing time he wants (i think the PT is much more important to him than the money). And, I like Freddy so much that I would rather him be happy (ie, starting for another team) than be here. How's that for true love?

BridgeTroll

I love Fred too... Huge Brett Favre fan too... 'cept they should have made this move last year...
In a boat at sea one of the men began to bore a hole in the bottom of the boat. On being remonstrating with, he answered, "I am only boring under my own seat." "Yes," said his companions, "but when the sea rushes in we shall all be drowned with you."

He ran for over 1000 yards in 07 - you don't don't cut a guy like that.

I hope he stays, but I understand if he leaves.  If he does stay, I feel like he'll have a monster season.

Sure you do...  Favre took GB to the NFC championship the year before he was traded.  Had the best year in many.  Sometimes it is time to move on.

Favre retired at the end of 07. The team moved on without him. They drafted QB's with their first 2 pick's in the 08 draft. Then right before training camp, he decided to come back. It was too late to scrap all the plans they made in the off season.

Also Brett's arm showed it's age in his last season in GB. He was the biggest reason they lost the NFC championship game. Remember the under thrown pass that was intercepted and lead to the Giants winning score. He had some good games in 08 but really trailed off towards the end of the year.

Fred Taylor however did have one of the best years of his career in 07. I still watch the highlight vid's on you tube for thrills. Maybe the o-line being healthy was the difference between 07 & 08.?

Are you trying to say Fred is not showing his age?  As a fan I never want to see these guys move on or stay too long.  As management of a pro football team... sometimes you have to move on.

Favre's '07 season was as good statistically as his Super bowl winning season.  Many fans in GB have still not forgiven management for trading him after he wanted back.  They were wrong then and are still wrong.  I am sure under the right circumstances Fred is serviceable running back...

I hate having to use the Steelers as a model, but they know when to cut ties with marquise players (Woodson, Porter, Lake etc.)  The jags made the best move possible today.  They gave freddy ample time to find a place to play in 09, saved 6 million, which part of will now be committed to locking up MJD to an extension and got young at RB.  MJD carries the rock 15-18 times and gets thrown to 4-5 times a game and you bring in a "pounder" in Greg Jones (i.e. Brandon Jacobs) for a true change of pace, which we never had when alternating Fred and MJD.  Times change folks and I applaud Gene Smith for this move and the two moves done last week.  I am more excited for the 09 season now then I was before this move.

MJD = Pro Bowl Selection in 2009

I'm saying Fred did not show his age in 07 and that's why he wasn't cut in 08. Last year he did drop off considerably and subsequently he was cut. I didn't agree with you that he should've been cut before 08 when he showed no signs of slowing down.

GB fans would've stuck by Favre in to his 60's. He did have a good year in 07 until the playoff's when he really showed his age. The GB staff was right to stick with their desicion to move on especially after the draft they made and with a great young prospect in Aaron Rodgers.

I am a little unsure about how I feel about the Fred Taylor move. I do agree with cutting Porter and Florence.

Is he up for a coaching job?  I'm sure MJD will attest to Fred's mentorship.  Maybe he can apply it to the other RBs?

If Fred moves on he'll definitely be missed.

BridgeTroll

Fred will be missed... I agree.  It is time to look forward...

I think that's maybe why other teams will pick him up as a running back and pay high dollar. Theres a lot of young backs around the league that could use a veteran teacher to split time with like MJD had up until now.

I think Jimmy Smith would've been a great WR coach as he was hailed for being a great route runner. That's something you can teach and not really a "god given talent".
