Local restaurant celebrates Abraham Lincoln’s birthday by emancipating the penny


The facts: The penny costs more to make than it is worth, and it has almost no purchasing power.

Making change with pennies costs U.S. economy  $1 billion in lost time.
Many other countries have already eliminated minor denomination coins with little to no negative impact on the economy.

Pennies are not only a choking hazard for small children and animals, but those minted after 1982 may also cause stomach ulcers.


The scoop: “With malice toward none, with charity for all,” the Riverside location of European Street Cafe is trying to gain support for its campaign to stop the use of the penny by staging a rally complete with demonstrators and an Abraham Lincoln look-alike.

On February 12, the restaurant will not accept pennies as a form of payment, nor will they give pennies as change. Instead, they will round prices down to the nearest nickel.

They will also be collecting unwanted pennies from customers on an ongoing basis and making a donation to the Lincoln Foundation, which provides educational enrichment programs to disadvantaged youth.
Out of respect for Lincoln, the restaurant will be offering a 5% discount to customers who pay only in $5 bills.

They are rounding down on change? Sounds like a money making scheme to me. I save all my change in a  jar and cash it out when it is full. Tell me pennies don't matter. I won't be going to European Street, that is for sure, if they just plan on stealing money from you.

I'd bring 10 dollars worth of pennies and only pay with them.  They are legal tender for all debt public and private you know.  The cops would come and probably arrest them for being stupid or something.  There's NOTHING they could do about it.  Trust me.  it's the Law. Who the heck are are they!
