QuoteTotal 2008 job loss: 2.6 million

Annual loss is biggest since the end of World War II. Payrolls shrink by 524,000 in December, and unemployment rate rises to 7.2%.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Another sobering government labor report released Friday showed the economy lost 524,000 jobs in December, bringing 2008's total job loss to just below 2.6 million.

Last year's steep drop in employment marked the highest yearly job-loss total since 1945, the year in which World War II ended.

Economists surveyed by Briefing.com had forecast a loss of 525,000 jobs in the month.

Somebody needs to start hiring.  IBM announced Jan 2 it is letting 16,000 go.

Been out since last week of Aug. so I feel for you aj.  Funny, I got 2 jobs, one was contingent on the firm getting a   contract which they didn't, the next one I got hired, but when I showed up to work they backed out.  Hang in there.

I was laid off in September. It was the first time I had ever been laid off, and I had a really tough time with it. Luckily I found another job within a month or so, but I feel for you guys. It's rough out there.

What are the outlets you are using in your employment search? Anything out there besides the monsters and careerbuilders?

Have y'all considered temporarily working in another line of work just to make ends meet?

aj_fresh

What do you consider ends meat? With all due respect, $10/hr is not really a respectable wage, no matter the market, job or city. Some people are fine with that. However, this would not really suffice for me or my family. I rather have the unemployment benefit and continue to find a line of work that suffices in wage and career goals. Unfortunately, my career goals (process improvement in the financial sector) doesn't seem to exist in this MSA. I continue to hold out hope to find something of the sorts.

I get $10/hr on unemployment. Thank god the Congress extended benefits another 13 weeks for states with an unemployment < 7% and another 26 weeks in states with  > 7%.  Durining the days M-F I am on  the net applying and interviewing.  I have to be available, and awake, during regular business hours to field these calls. I honestly feel my work is paying off. I study and review as well as practice interview questions and take on line tutorials.  Since the 2nd. week of January things have picked up.  Had I worked during this time I feel it would prevent progress.
