Lunch at Three Layers

Well this is the first time that I have been in for lunch at the quintessential little cafe in Springfield.

As with all other elements of the establishment all of the details have been thought out and they have a tasteful, healthy menu.

Of course the sumptuous desserts and coffees are still all available in profusion, sharable portions and every inch monuments to homebaked confectionarianism.  But the lunch is aimed at a different palate and occasion, its apparent that they took some time thinking about it.

There was even a little bit of a lunch rush, all office women with the tremendously popular chicken salad.

Everyone was served within 3 minutes (unbelievable in any other location especially considering the quality.)

I had the hummous platter, awesome taste and perfect amount for a lunch.

Its nice to see the place evolving.

I've been enjoying their salads since they started serving them...well worth it! I just love this place, the people. Jeff and Shawn have created a wonderful setting!

Hey I heard that Santa Claus is going to be there Saturday Dec.20 from 12-4 for free pictures with peeps and pets. That is cool guys.. Nice job!!! There are lots of people in the neighborhood that can't afford to go to the malls and pay $25 for a pic with Mr. Kringle. Way to give back to the hood!!!

The coffee, cake and salads are delicious.  I think having some awesome sandwiches for lunch would make Three Layers a draw from everywhere in Jacksonville.

I know that they are restricted by their license as to what kind of foods they can serve...which is why they have salads and not sandwiches....although I wish they had them too.

Why this coffeehouse is worth the trip:

- A waft of homemade baked goods greets you when you pass through the doors of the warm and welcoming historic Springfield storefront.

- The Jeff Squares, named for baker Jeff Wright, who owns Three Layers along with his partner Shawn McGuire, are such a hit that regulars have taken to calling the treats "crack on a plate."

- Wright and McGuire know how to create a comfy, entertaining atmosphere, offering all-pieces-intact board games, the newspaper (hurray!), a Magic 8 Ball, interactive coffee-table books, free wireless Internet and even a high-definition image of a crackling fireplace to their guests (fireplace video subject to change to nature documentaries).

- Three Layers' art galley features rotating exhibits from local artists - local to Springfield, when possible.

- Santa is planning to visit Three Layers from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday. Bring the kids (fleshy or furry) and a camera for a free photo op with the man in red.

- A chill new event, Dulcet Perks with DJ Catharsis, starts Saturday (and continues the third Saturday of each month from 6 to 9 p.m.).

- Sundays are for film folks, with movies playing all day on the big screen, with surround sound to boot.

- Their soups 'n' salads lunch menu offers tasty and healthful items, and if you dine in for Wednesday lunch, you can enjoy the acoustic sounds of Al Poindexter. Who else offers live music during a midweek lunch?

- Portrait artist Richard Jones is in-house from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursdays to do pencil portraits. Drawings are $10 and take 30 to 40 minutes.

- Not into coffee? Check the place out anyway and get yourself a smoothie. You know you need the vitamins.

They need to work on getting the licensce for sandwiches.  That would help their business.

The city actually makes you have a LICENSE to serve SANDWICHES???

No, the city does not make you have a license to make sandwiches. The license they currently have does not allow for them to make things like sandwiches, as that would then turn them into a restaurant and they are not...nor do I know of any intent on their behalf to change the kind of license they have.

I was told today that they will be serving sandwiches soon.  I will ask about that the next time I go in.

That would be fantastic....does this mean they're changing their license? I know that Jeff and I talked about this before, and he did say that they could sell some kind of sandwich, but I think it has something to do with not being able to cook something for sandwiches there....that's where the issue with the licensing comes into play. Anyway, like I said, I'd love it if they had them!

Well...we called the Dept of Agriculture and they said that we can serve sandwiches..but we cannot assemble them.  So, you get a bowl of Chicken Salad, or Tuna Salad...some greens(if you want them) and Whole grain bread or Pita or Jeff's dads English Muffin Bread, on the side.  You assemble it yourself.  It is working out quite nicely coupleled with a cup of soup.  With our license we are not allowed to "prepare" food.  We can bake, we can repackage..but not prepare...it's kinda a pain in the butt and we are considering changing our license. 

It's been a great year.  Thanks to everyone for the support of our local small business.  Cheers to a healthy and happy 2009!

I just wanted to say that getting to build your own chicken salad sandwich is a great concept anyway.
My boss had one yesterday evening, and just raved about it! But it wasn't until I looked up on here that we knew why it was served like that.

Quirky, but nonetheless delicious! She's insisted that we hold our next office lunch 'meeting' there.

I'll be there for lunch on Friday myself.

Nothing quirky about it...they had no intention of changing their license to make the sandwiches....they give you all the goodies in bowls or on the plate, and you make it yourself. It's a coffee house. The chicken and potato salads are so good! It's a fantastic place to have lunch or hang out with friends/coworkers....
